Well, as someone once said -- the Americans will do the right thing, when all other possibilities have been exhausted.

Depressing to see that the only member of the House actually born in Ukraine was *against* the bill.

I wonder what's behind Mike Johnson's about-turn. Was he secretly the good guy trying to get it through all the time, or a Putin and Trump dupe who for some unknown reason suddenly saw the light?

I was wondering, but it's passed thank chuff.

Quick question, even though it was very short lived, did the Iran attack on Israel help Ukraine insomuch as that was all things that cannot now be used but Russia?

Hard to say imho. I think the Iran connection, attacking Israel and helping Russia to attack Ukraine, might have seeped into some minds but tbh the Maga crowd are so isolationist and thick they wouldn't understand it anyway.

But Trump seems oddly subdued on this, even after Johnson went and paid court to him the other day. Maybe he realized that much of the US public back Ukraine over Russia.

Interesting theory the other day was that Johnson, being a headbanging bible-bashing fundamentalist, was swayed by Russia's track record in destroying churches and persecuting evangelicals, not only in Ukraine.

But overall, my hunch is that Trump smelled electoral danger. Big Ukrainian and east European communities across much of the midwest.

The Economist wonders if Trump balked at letting Ukraine win because the resulting geopolitical mess would end up on his desk if he regains the presidency. But I suspect that credits him with more strategic vision than he actually has.

I have also been ruminating over this and am undecided on what finally forced their hand(s) but am relieved that the Americans have come through. Totally agree with Mutt's observation below, never a truer word spoken!

I know. Don't worry, I'll give myself a bloody good bollocking later and start disagreeing :-)
