There will be people who say whatabout, whatabout ... eg, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, waterboarding etc etc. The difference is that when those came to light there was an almighty stink and political embarrassment, even if the perpetrators were not held to account as much as they should have been. But in Russia this behaviour is celebrated by politicians and perps, who are publicly proud of it.

I’m not trying to excuse it but of all the things to criticise Russia for, this seems particularly thin gruel. At least in this case it seems pretty likely they are actually guilty, unlike (say) a bunch of Irish men who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time a few decades back. That wasn’t just a bit of brutality, it was fitting up innocent men (and as a consequence letting guilty parties go free, don’t forget).

And as for “when those came to light”, more like when the accumulated weight of evidence finally overcame years of cover-up and collusion. Let there be no doubt that large numbers of those in political and administrative power were very eager to keep guilty men in prison for their own convenience. People are people all around the world, and a lot of them don’t behave any better than they have to. |

I wasn't taking aim at you, jda. But if you say that criticizing Russia for this kind of conduct is "thin gruel" I'm afraid you know nothing about Russia. |

It wasn't criticism from me, just a statement of what I thought was likely to happen. Because pretty much every country has done it doesn't make it ok for anyone to keep doing it. |

The skipper of the ship that hit the bridge in Baltimore is Ukrainian. So it looks like payback for Congress' delay in passing the next aid package. I heard it on Russian TV this evening, so it must be true. |
