Chris, I think they just do make a distinctive slapping sound - don't know if it's the foam of the carbon. I also think the plate puts a bit more strain on your calf muscles - that was the only bit of me that was sore after my first marathon in them. Next one was fine though, so I think you can train to get over it.

Good I’m not the only slapper.... It was damp today and I was surprised they didn’t skip at all, they don’t look like they have loads of grip |

No grip as soon as you leave tarmac

Bicycle lore is that the road is what provides the tread for a slick tyre. IE smooth rubber is fine. Assume the same logic/physics applies to shoes (only on tarmac as Gobi says).

True about grip - fine on tarmac even when wet - BUT - on my last (rain drenched) marathon they were very slippy on the fancy new shiny paving stones through the town centre - I tell myself that cost me about a minute and first place...

Just invested in some of these, picked them up yesterday. Taking them for a test spin Thursday...they feel so comfortable on! Have been using Newtons for years, but don't like the tweaks to the newer models and have exhausted supplies of the older ones, so am looking for a change...

Agree with the comments on the grip, i ran Chicago in the rain and i didn't have any issues with grip on the road. Not the same though with the Epic Reacts which wear after a few miles and the grip is horrendous. I also have grip issues with my Adios in wet conditions. |

More research into what makes the 4% so good, compared directly to other racing shoes medicalxpress.com "Contrary to what they expected, they found no difference in the runners' knee or hip joint mechanics between shoes. But they did find that those wearing the 4% shoes didn't have to exert as much muscular torque at their ankles, and thus the calf muscles did not have to do as much work. Further, the plate made the shoe less flexible and thus the foot muscles that stabilize the toe joints didn't have to work so hard" |

I noticed the flexibility change. Normally when I buy new trainers I give them a good bending around the toes/forefoot to break them in a bit before wearing. You can't do it with the Vaporfly's; the toe section is very rigid |
