Gobi are the Zoom fly any similar to the vaporfly in terms of feel ? I currently use the Epic Reacts for my easier runs but they don't compare.

Zoom fly has the same foam I believe, which is what studies credit as giving the 4% exrea, but NOT the carbon plate, but the plate isn't meant to be the benefit giving part of them (just the expensive part!). I had read the Zoom flies gave almost as much performance enhancement as teh Vapor Fly, but can no longer find it. Probably coz if it's true Nike don't want you spending half the money...

An interesting read here about how the vaporfly's work, seems to suggest the foam but the carbon plate needed for stability... outsideonline.com

pirating Gus' original post on the differences:

Differences between Zoom Fly v1 and v2, from roadtrailrun ( which is a great site for really detailed shoe reviews ) :-

The new Zoom Fly substitutes:

- the mostly plastic propulsion plate of the original for a full carbon plate similar but not as wide as the VaporFly's

- the original's Lunarlon midsole for Nike new React but not the Zoom X of the VaporFly

- and the engineered mesh upper for a Flyknit upper with no overlays and no heel counter

I saw the Zoom Fly v1 in the Nike outlet store a few weeks ago. Heavily discounted and there were loads of them. I can't quite remember the price - could have been 60 quid?

and I find this quite helpful to describe the differences (if a little contrived!):

Yeah I got my zoom fly for 67 quid in the hope that training in them would keep the VF going for longer. In fact I got 4 pairs for £270 as my wife took 3 attempts to chose the right size for her (I'm not so fussy/hard to fit) :-)

FWIW she took 30 secs off her 5k PB first time out in them, though she has been working a bit harder on her running and I wouldn't put it all down to the shoes. I would have been closer to my PB too (or at least my best on that course) if I'd run a better race on the night. Obviously I can't yet say how they compare to the VF but they do feel quite fast. That NYT analysis had them on a par with my adios boost, next best thing to the VF but with a bit of daylight between them.

Chrisull - I think the only shoe other than the 4% that has the ZoomX foam is the Peg 35 Turbo. Despite the marketing for that shoe which talks only about ZoomX, the midsole is actually 2 layers, with just the top layer ZoomX and the larger lower layer React foam. No plate of any description in the Peg 35 turbo.

So to summarise these newer shoes :

4% : ZoomX foam, carbon plate
Zoom Fly v1 : Lunarlon foam, plastic plate
Zoom Fly v2 : React foam, carbon plate
Peg 35 Turbo : ZoomX/React foam, no plate

I find they have a similar feel so mean I don't need to use the 4% too often
