When the fivefingers craze was in full swing, I just remember seeing the lower legs of marathon runners also being covered in kinesio tape

IIRC he said elite athletes use super shoes for their workouts because of their leg-saving properties.

Don't know how to quote on Fetch ouch. I meant to say that Wouter Hoogkamer (author of the original 4% study) stated that athletes do their workouts in super shoes. |

Yes, SPR, the Bare Access were less minimal than the Five Fingers, in that they had a thin layer of cushioning, but were nonetheless zero drop (which is the main issue for Achilles, I would think). I transitioned to zero drop maybe 15 years ago and do lots of running in zero drop shoes still, although I also have quite a few pairs with up to 8mm drop. More than that, though, and I really don't like it. I'm with Chrisull here, I think learning to run in zero drop / 'barefoot' style shoes really helped my running. I've had different issues, but I've lost virtually no time to injury in the 20 or so years I've been running and I can't help feel this is part of it. It's what gives me a certain apprehension about doing lots of training in the thick foam shoes, notwithstanding the apparent benefits in terms of leg trashing. |

open.spotify.com The episode is here. He said they are running 60% of their mileage in the shoes so more than workouts. Mentioned Kiptum specifically as running all his mileage in them. |

Zero drop is usually the main thing but the lack of structure can add more stress, also the toe separation is another thing that can add further stress. I actually have some VFFs and have a few pairs of Vivobarefoot for casual wear as well as running in minimal shoes/ cushioned barefoot shoes pretty much for all of the time I've run. |

The section on super trainers has some conversation around the less stress = less training benefit. Research not around on that though so it's just thoughts on the plausibility of that. The study I mentioned earlier (also mentioned in the podcast) suggests there could be some benefit to non-supershoe training. |

I hadn't heard the 60% or the Kiptum 100% before. Well I know which podcast I will listen to on my Sunday long run. |

I have the Dragonfly 2 and ran a session in them today. First thing trying them on at home made me realise I over tighten the laces on V1 over the forefoot/midfoot, I guess that's related to stability ande feeling like I had to do that with them. With V2 they feel stable and also around the ankle is more substantial so they feel very secure there hence I didn't feel the need to pull them tighter over forefoot/ midfoot. We'll see if that changes as I race with them. Pebax plate is also stiffer which in theory should be faster. Session in them went very well. From now on, they'll be saved for races and I'll use V1 for training when I want to use spikes. It will be interesting whether I get on ok with looser lacing or feel the need to tighten them back up. |

Well, I've bitten the bullet and ordered a pair of Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris (a birthday present, in fact). I'll report back. Shame I don't have them in time for a 10K race tomorrow, but there are none available locally, could only get them online (and couldn't do that until a couple of days ago, none available anywhere).
