Some numbers around the track spikes and how much they seem to be worth per mile: theguardian.com Viperfly sprint spike has been "shelved" in the last 3 days, seemingly amid fears Bolt's records might get beaten. Expecting to see WRs galore if Tokyo Olympics goes ahead. I'm also thinking we could see a handful of shocks from lesser known track athletes who turn out to be super responders to the new breed of shoes. |

I think we do also have to consider that as a result of Covid, everybody's running year has been radically different from normal. It is conceivable that the training the elites have been doing, and the reduction in racing, has meant that they have been able to perform at a higher level. I'm not saying I necessarily believe this is the key, but we really need to see how things work out with the shoes in a 'normal' year, post-Covid.

"the training the elites have been doing, and the reduction in racing" and the concurrent reduction in out-of-competition testing ... ?

unsliced, yes, I have heard that idea bandied about. I'd like to know if there's any basis to it.

It's funny how everyone wants the shoes to be seen as worth less than they are while still getting the benefit. Elite were already training at a high level. Can understand sub elite benefiting from a different year, there's more opportunity cost issues there. Not really seeing that with elites TBH.

All I want from my supershoes is for them to give me the few seconds benefit I need, while allowing me to pretend to others, and to convince myself, that it's actually down to superior training on my part.

I think that about sums it up J2R, lol. Someone like Chris Thompson at least admits that he needs to be in the shoes just to keep the playing field level. Going back to FD's post about Bolt's record being beaten, my guess is it would then truly bring the spikes into mainstream attention and may be seen as negative by a lot more people? Took me awhile to spot what was different in the nike spikes, needed a side on angle. They look to aggressive for me. Has anyone seen the New Balance super spikes? I'm a LD5000 wearer and I wonder whether they are a new version of these or the MD800 (or something totally different)? |

If I did get a super spike I'd definitely look at doing races with and without them to see what difference I personally saw.
