Or to compare same distance, it looks like superspikes might gain you 15-20secs for 5000m, while out on the roads (or parkrun) you can use vaporfly which offer roughly 40-50secs improvement for 5k. For someone running 15:30-16:00 sort of time.

These figures vary depending on how well or not the runner gets on with the shoes, but on average those are the differences, in my own experience and looking at lots of other runners whose times/training I know fairly well.

To be honest, if I shave off anything like 40-50 seconds from my 5K time with my Saucony Endorphin Pros (still sitting in my cupboard waiting for their first proper outing), I think I'll be dismayed rather than anything else. I won't really believe the time, and it will kind of invalidate all previous efforts on my part, and all previous metrics as to what constitutes a significant achievement.

What level of runner have you seen this kind of improvement for, fuzzyduck? Given your times, I suspect it's not the back-of-the-pack runners we're talking about, but more like people who are already doing sub-17 5Ks?

Nooo surely not that much advantage for a road 5k.

15-20s for 5000m is completely unbelievable for me.
In my experience when threshold training, wearing trainers vs spikes is a second a lap tops.

It’s about 4.5% improvement, in line with large amounts of data from Strava. The analysis was for half marathon and marathon with next% and 4% batched as there was no statistical difference according to their findings

My data for 5k/10k suggests same gain in % terms

Some get 1% faster, some get 7% faster (effect is smaller for elites, greater for mid pack runners) but bulk of people I’ve observed closely fall in 4-5% range (inc me)

15-20sec for track 5000 is meant to compare old spikes to the new superspikes. I’m only guessing there off very limited evidence so far

10 secs over 3000 is only marginal if you compare it to road improvements. We know the WA are shrugging already but it's interesting they're 'protecting' Bolt's records while shrugging elsewhere.

38.4 secs is 4% of 16 mins. Generally elite don't get 1 to 1 improvements front efficiency gains but slower runners do. 16 mins may generally get a bit less than 1 to 1 but every individual responds slightly differently.

For me, no gain in parkruns for same effort between LT streaks and VF.
Perhaps up to a minute over HM.
I think for a lot of the recreational runners, they weren't racing in flats previously. Not really fair to compare a vf to a chunky shoe.

I think the headline is wrong (he ditched the Adidas road shoes, not their spikes) but this article is an honest account from Jamie Webb. An interesting question for me is whether he could have done that time if he wasn’t chasing Elliot Giles in the superspikes:

J2R, most of the runners I’ve taken a close look at were 16:45-20:00 over 5k before

The largest improvement I’ve seen was someone going from 18:10 to 16:50 in one jump with no time or training to explain the difference. Performances were 1 or 2 weeks apart, in similar conditions on same course

But there was an excellent pack all wearing VF that day which I suspect helped slightly.
