Clare, I'm 2 weeks out and I'm still trying to work out race strategy. I ran a half yesterday and intended to run 5K@MP, 5K slower, 5K@MP, the rest slower but it was a bit all over the place. Still did it in just under 1:45.

Try to work out how aggressive I am going to be come race day. Part of me says just follow the 3:30 pacer and the other part of me says, go out a bit faster because you should be able to beat 3:30. I know ideally I should do the first half following the pacer then speed up, but when you get into a certain pace then increasing it is difficult.

Any suggestions?

I'd stick with the pacer to beyond 18 miles and then go for home from there. That's my plan. If you're feeling confident then pick up the pace earlier. You don't need to go off like your making a break in a Tour de France stage just a gentle acceleration over a couple of miles until you hit the pace you can sustain to the end.

Depends a bit CW if you like running in a group or doing your own pacing. Your right in that you "should" be able to break 3:30 going by half time, mileage etc, and while even pacing is probably best most people definitely slow over the last few miles - that can be either by a little in a well judged race or by a lot (bitter experience).

I reckon if you trust yourself not to go crazy then starting a bit quicker than 3:30 pace to give yourself plenty of space and a little buffer for the inevitable slow down at the end. If you catch up with the 3:15 pacer slow down ;-)

CW - pick the (realistic) time you want to hit then go out at that pace and crack off the splits
