Just looked at your EH20 time - 10 mins faster than my Stafford 20 so I'm not so optimistic! Well done though!

EH20 is completely flat and featureless, though, and I'd have been quicker today on tarmac instead of cobbles.

I heard there were a few organisational issues in Hull today - I was thinking of doing it as well (used to live there, ran for Hull Springhead as a kid).

Hello All. would it be OK if I Join this thread? So far I have a 4:09 Marathon. Its the only one I have done to date - Abingdon last year. I do Brighton next weekend and training has gone well. More miles in training than Abingdon, 4 PB's during the training period including a 73 Min 10Mile and 21;02 5K. All I am looking for in Brighton is a solid Sub 4 and then after a 2 week break will up the training again for a Sub 3:30 attempt at Abingdon in October. I may even Join a local Running club to help with the summer motivation etc.
Good luck to you all attempting the sub 3:30 over the next few weeks !!

Hi AGF and Welcome Please keep popping in to let us know how you get on in Brighton ands beyond and to contribute / share stuff as you see fit.
I see you have done a lot of similar races to me - where are you based? If you are Leamington/ Warwick, my club (Spa Striders) is great - do come along!

Sounds like great progress so far AGF and a very doable Abingdon goal. Love Abo. Was my second mara ever and first one I really pushed at. Made good progress during the campaign and got my goal. Great race. Good luck at Brighton (and to all doing Brighton next weekend.) :-)G

Clare/happy G, thanks for the welcome. Yes I am pleased with progress. I think regular 40mile weeks have helped with base. It's my first period of any real consistency. Yes I live in Warwick Clare. Chase meadow, so often run different loops around the two towns. Have thought about striders or kenilworth as Leamington athletics looks a bit too hardcore for me and not sure they do much longer running stuff. Think joining will help with long runs as at the moment I do them on my own, mainly slowly which is good for aerobic system but think I need to mix it up a bit too. Have done a few runs with sweatshop in notts if I stay over with work and find I run faster running in groups so it's will be good to mix it up. Only 5 days to race. So looking forward to it

Hello everyone - glad to hear a few more people breaking that 3.30 barrier!
Been away for a few days so haven't had chance to reply to the responses on my planned training. I am following the FIRST training plan but I have also concluded it is a bit heavy during the taper so am looking to make a few modifications.
Did a 13-mile PMP run today and felt pretty good (apart from a slight strain in my knee ligament which I have iced up as a precaution). That's it now for anything resembling a long-run and now looking to just take it easy but do a few sharpness sessions (short interval sessions or short PMP runs).
Enjoyed reading the posts about the "voice in the head" - I am also in that camp at the moment. Training has gone really well and feel I should be set for a sub 3.30 but then I am still dreading the last few miles. At Abingdon last year, I was going really well until the last 4 miles or so when it went from being painful to being excruciating. However, I then managed to find a ridiculous finish in the stadium and did the last 400m in 1.20 so obviously still had something to give - just need to be able to access it.
I've decided I am going to go off at 8mm and see how I go. Have set myself 4 possible targets: 1. Sub 3.30 2. Sub 3.35 3. New PB (current 3.40.52) 4. Blame it on the weather/volume of runners/food I ate yesterday and just enjoy the atmosphere!
Decided I should have a pretty good idea by about mile 17 which one looks most likely so going to take it from there!!
Hope everyone has had a good Easter and looking forward to the races in the next couple of weeks!!

PS - Seen a few people mentioning Abingdon. Did that last year for my first marathon. Absolutely flat as a pancake so very good PB potential for those looking to use that to break the 3.30 mark.

I'm not totally convinced that it really does make a difference if the route is completely flat. I've run some pretty flat races (Paris, Rotterdam, Amsterdam) and I can't help thinking that a bit of a roll is better on the legs.
Just my opinion, mind.
