Its how I broke 3.30 lol. Although not the usual recommended route, it can be done. I did no speedwork whatsoever.

I've got better at marathons since I stopped speedwork! Maybe down at the sharp end of the field you are looking to squeeze out the seconds, but my view is that if your shorter races say you can hold the required pace for 6 or 13 miles, you have the base speed and you need "tempo endurance" to do it for longer. Therefore time on feet, progressively running more and more at target pace, works for me.

TBH I think I wasn't far off at Lochaber but life stuff meant I started the walk/run sooner than I would have if I didn't have to be in hospital with wee man that night. I'm *really* going for 3:15 come London if the last few months of this year go well :)

My plan was made up by my OH who is a seasoned marathon and ultra runner. Involves speedwork, hills, mid and long runs. just need to get myu fitness back now.

My plan is to do some short quick midweek 5km & 10km events to do speedwork as i struggle to do it on my own & see if I can get round Chicago sub 3.30 ?

My plan will also involve some whinging about speedwork, and some moaning about LSRs, as well as guilt about missing miles and some nerves about any race that I decide to enter. I expect to mutter the words 'stupid bloody marathon nonsense' several times too.
