Thanks [USER 105817 there was definitely too much wind for my liking 😁

Hello riggys99. You have a speedy marathon to your name! What do you think was the biggest contribute to achieving that time?

Hello Solo for me the key looking back was

1) consistency - not just in the training block but leading up to it. And consistency of getting long runs in
2) couple of half marathons and 10ks to get used to racing etc but not too worried about times as legs were heavy from training

3) Marathon pace in some of the long runs

4) Bit of luck on the day and everything going more or less to plan
5) sleeping in my own bed as race was only 3 miles or so from home

Hope the answer I have given helps. I also don’t think there is any one right way just maybe the right way for you. Frosty The Bowman πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ has a faster time so maybe he could help as well

Yea well not by that much riggys99 , i still feel like a newbie, but thanks:)

I have listen to you and a lot of other people in these threads. 4h celebration thread, 3:30: 3:15 and so on.
All good and valid suggestions.
For me, as well, consistency, mileage and a lot of long runs all year around has done the trick to go from ~4h to 3:01h so far. Also some race experience as you say Riggys, helps a lot.
I have a very broad plan, but some people have to have very specific plans. So what whatever floats your boat as long as its gets done.

Trust the process!

Yes to all 5 points made by riggys99.

I'm lucky to have a reasonably flat marathon only 3 miles away from me so that takes away the hassle of travelling and sleeping in a hotel. Weather plays a huge part in the 'luck' category. Leipzig on the same day as London can be anything from 2Β°C and sleet to 23Β°C and sun. I've had both so far and neither was ideal for the fastest possible race. I got my PB last year when we started with light rain and 12Β°C. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it won't be too warm this year.

I also agree with Bowman's advice.

Once you've found a plan/method that works for you, stick to it. I love the P&D with modifications; mostly more races than it has, because racing takes practice. I'm over an hour faster now than I was at the beginning, 4:33 to 3:29 and I'm hoping to shave a few minutes off that time each time I race a marathon.

Yes something like that tipsku, the best training is the one that gets done.
So i rather get it done, than get it perfectly executed.
Show up get it done.

I must also say, i try to do most of it "easy".
That took some time for me to get use to.

So for me, if i would do a list.

Important for me:
Consistency
Mileage
Mostly easy effort, to be able to have a high mileage without injuries.
Enjoy (most of it must be somewhat fun)

Not that important for me:
Precise schedule or plan
Short speed sessions, besides for fun

An other thing is, it gets exponential harder the closer you get to your "limit", you won't shave off half an hour every time.. But i did shave off over five minutes, last time, when i thought it might be a few seconds here and there, so it might not always be the case 🀣
