Hey, and compared to me, in terms of milage, you're all old pros. Up until last year, I was only tickling the surface.

Very useful to get others perspective on things. Pacing and effort can be really tricky sometimes. I think my HM pace on a flat course would be somewhere around 4:30/km (7:15/mi) which would put my Marathon time somewhere about 3hr 20 I think.

According to McMillan Running, my Tempo pace should be 4:20 - 4:30/km. I think tomorrow is Tempo day, so i'll see how I get on.

I'm hoping to peak my distance a bit this week and into next as February is going to be difficult (i'll explain in a blog, probably end of next week).

I'm just going to tag onto my post from yesterday as i'm planning my run now.

Daniels has my Tempo pace for a 55min effort at 4:38/km. I think i'll head out at about that pace and see how I get on. If the legs feel good and the HR is in the right place, i'll see if I can get down closer to 4:30/km or under.

Personally if I have a plan I'm following then I stick to it as close as possible, the times given are based on your current ability, why would you want to push the boundaries? After your current race you have a much better idea for the next plan and potential pace improvement if you felt you didn't work hard enough.

I appreciate the input FF. If I may address your points:

For better or worse, I write my own plans and as such, continually update them as I go. I'd rather do that than spend weeks under-training for an event, only then to update the numbers and go all over again.

Why would I want to push the boundries? Well to be able to do as well as I can in my target race.

I'm back from the workout, having done 11km at 4:25/km in HR zone 4. In HR terms, that's exactly what I wanted from the session.

Well it's better to undertrain than to overtrain. It is better to run your tempo runs a little too slow than a little too fast.

That's what all the hype about the Ingebrigtsen threshold training is about: to control the effort, and to err on the side of caution.
What you call undertraining i.e. training with paces that are "too slow" is not an issue. You will gain fitness nevertheless. While running too fast may cause injuries or overtraining.

<I>Just my humble opinion of course.

Can't argue with that.

Today's Speedwork Session - Intervals

Cooler day, which made for a more bearable day for running, good job really as today was an intervals day.

Hard session but good. Definitely knew it was going to be a hanging on type of day, too. By the fourth interval I was really feeling it. The final interval was about just hanging on and trying not to throw up :) But I managed to stay within target pace (3:48-4:10) for all 6 intervals so got to be happy with that.
