I ran my last marathon with 88% of MHR.
It seems high compared to “normal” marathon % of MHR.
Effort wise it was probably spot on. I manage the race very well, no wall, felt good afterwards, recovered well.
I have tested MHR in a lab, and have also hit it during hard intervals so MHR should be accurate.

Apparently I have a high LT1, i:e a high HR where I still burn a lot of fat, my guess is that >10 years of low carb training, and a lot of running on an empty stomach, no energy during long runs (besides in training for marathon) has done something.

What % of MHR do you guys maintain during your marathon’s?

And does it really matter or is it just a consequence of your “engines” build?

I mean, If I did the same time at the same effort and same feeling afterwards but at a lower MHR % theres really no difference?

Just different physiological set up?

What’s your take on this?

Similar for me, Bowman. 85-90% for an evenly paced marathon (some cardiac drift) and no need to use gels or other carbohydrate sources on long runs. I've often said that if I ate low carb I'd be claiming to be keto-adapted, but I don't so it's just genetic luck and years of getting efficient.

I ran my last marathon at avg 90% of MHR (never actually hit hrmax during that race although I did in the marathon before at the very end). I am an absolute gel muncher though both in the race and in training so I don't know if percentage of MHR and carb requirements are correlated?

Oops sorry been neglecting it all somewhat... I'll have a look back and make some updates.

If anybody would like to take over the thread admin on this page, that would be great - after quite a few years I admit I've lost momentum with it.... thanks!

Hey clare, totally understand the desire to step away from hosting this or any thread after a long shift. Thank you so much for doing what you’ve done for so long and being a source of great encouragement over the years.

Thanks again SS👏👏👏

Thank you - but no need to thank me. I'm not going anywhere, but just conscious I'm not actively leading or encouraging this thread so somebody else could do a better job I'm sure...

New York marathon for me next week - 2 years later than it should have been and 3 years in planning so it's long awaited and anticipated. Very excited about it but I'm adamant I want to enjoy the whole thing and I haven't trained 'properly' to race it. My aim is to run strong and enjoy, which I suspect will come out around 3:40-45 if all goes to plan. Then London next spring now my GFA is confirmed and I'm going for it - after Manchester I would very much like to achieve something similar / better than that and if all aligns closer to the time, to maybe go for a PB. Something I never expected to even consider 2-3 years ago when I thought my knee damage had put an end to me running much at all, let alone pushing my own boundaries. But not getting ahead of myself just yet...

Well, thanks anyway, but never mind all that.

New York! How exciting and what a wonderful prospect after the injury struggles and covid hiatus. You’ve been an excellent judge of where you’re at in the past, so best wishes for a great trip and a cracking run.
