I think the track cushioning makes a difference and my former track training shoes were my road racing shoes (Reebok FRFP) that had been retired from road but probably could have continued on track indefinitely if they hadn't lost a chunk due to being spiked.

The Dragonfly spike is more cushioned than them though (at least it feels that way, it's probably exactly the same if measured but the DFs have firmer cushion) which is why I've had no issue training in them the last couple of sessions but wouldn't want to make it a habit. VFs are used quite often in track training these days from what I see even though I intuitively feel they'd make spikes harder to get used to.

If you look at the Rival Distance which is the update to the Rival D you see they have more foam and look like a baby dragonfly. Not sure whether they are faster/ slower/ no difference Vs previous versions due to that given its not a super foam.

Just thought I would add here that when I did my P&D 18/70 - for about 3-4 weeks I suffered from an elevated heart rate (and dropping vo2max).

I had dismissed overtraining since RHR was only 2 beats higher and I otherwise felt okay apart from runs.

After trying lots of things (had iron tested) and cutting back for 3 weeks I stopped taking Lansoprazole which seemed to improve things and I got back to normal before the marathon. So I thought I had found the issue.

Cut to now, almost 4 weeks after Boston. I have been suffering from exactly the same elevated heart rate symptoms. For instance todays 8 mile GA run my garmin thought was a tempo run.

Beats per mile have been hovering above 1200 when 'good' numbers are around 1000 or so. Runalyze Vo2max for todays run 41 compared to average of around 50 during marathon block.

So, what can I gather from this? Maybe it was overtraining after all since the symptoms are exactly the same now in what I assume is still marathon recovery.

This scuppers my plans for October a bit as I am worried about taking on the 70 mile plan. Maybe the 12/55 would be better?

I am not sure what advice I am after although any will be taken! Just needed to write it down somewhere!!

SJA have you had any heart tests recently?I would recommend getting an ecg and echocardiogram. It might also be useful to do a heart exercise stress test. That way you could rule out any heart issues that might be affecting your training.

Thanks for that B Rubble. I saw the doctor when I had my bloods done during the training plan and they didn't seem the least bothered so didn't check! I actually bought an ECG to check myself and it was fine so I sent it back. Maybe worth doing it for a bit longer though. I might reinvest.

Wasn’t sure where else to put this.

Heard bad things over the years about Edinburgh marathon but I was out with a group of runners for a social run yesterday who had a nightmare for other reasons. A group of Motleys flew up and they’d booked a Haven campsite, in those large caravans, and it turns out that individuals on the campsite rent theirs out. No problem. However, Motleys booked I think 3 caravans individually via booking.com but one of the caravans didn’t exist. IE, it must have been a fake advert. This runner arrived at the site at 10:30pm to find there was actually no booking, spent some time emailing booking.com, who couldn’t get hold of the vendor, as he didn’t exist. Then booking.com cancelled the booking, and then they were on their own at midnight. They found something (a premier inn, I think), but what a stress on the Friday before the race.

I didn’t ask, but I wonder if the advert they booked had any reviews on it, or if it was an advert from a brand new account? They’re trying to get all all the extra expenses out of booking.com, so it’ll be interesting to see if they manage that.

That is a horror story Big_G! Poor runner. I am just about to go on my first ever "week in the sun doing nothing" 1 week holiday with my wife (normally hols are visits to family etc. around the world) and car rental in Malta sounds like the Wild West. Horror stories of cars being keyed in order to retain your £1500 excess and so on if you don't take out their "all inclusive" insurance. This travelling lark is stressful. And totally not a sub 3:15 topic, sorry!

I did a 32 minute parkrun last weekend and my achilles hurt a lot after. 3:15 was about my accumulated paddleboard time over the weekend, if that helps?! :-) G

I havent heard of this with Booking (but not surprised) but I know in the US theres been big issues with this on AirBnb or people turning up to find what theyve booked already has someone else staying there.

I know AirBnB have a bad reputation. We have used them a lot and barely had an issue. We had one cancel on us, but gave us plenty notice and an immediate refund. We have had some be really flexible when airlines have mucked us about and others who we have got to know the owners and we are able to deal with privately now

I use hotels.com and Airbnb a lot too, and I’ve never had any issues. In the case of hotels.com I tend to book actual hotels or bed and breakfasts, rather than private caravans/rooms etc. Maybe I’ve been lucky. Personally I wouldn’t use Airbnb for things like an expensive foreign marathon as I know of a lot of people in 100MC who have had their accommodation cancelled close to the race. Imagine that happening for something like Boston, where alternative accommodation close to the race is astronomical in price. I did it use Airbnb for Riga marathon a couple of weeks as I went with a mate who snores very loudly and I wanted my own room! I used hotels.com for all of our Japan trip, and had zero issues.
