If I recall correctly, they both were (past tense) sub 15 5k runners. They are not at that level right now.

So I think the 5min/mile runner will probably get at most 15mpw.
The 10min/mile runner will probably run no more than 60mpw because it takes a lot of time at that pace to get decent mileage.

"THE RULES
One run per day; no doubles.
All runs must be continuous; no reps.
Instantaneous pace cannot exceed pace limit by more than 30 sec/mile (i.e. at no point may Vinny run slower than 5:30/mi, nor me faster than 9:30/mi)
No single mile split (or fraction of a mile) may exceed the pace limit by more than 10 sec/mile (i.e. Vinny's slowest allowable split is 5:10; my fastest allowable split is 9:50).
I may not abuse vertical gain outside of reasonable geographic conditions.
I may not do strides.
Vinny is allotted 400m each for warm up and cool down for injury prevention purposes.
I am allotted 400m of drills per day.
Both competitors may do weight training, but no other forms of cross training"

I just don't see how anyone can think it's sensible to train for a marathon on 10 mins per day.

10 mins. That's it. Makes it seem even more ridiculous than miles per week.

I suppose it's not that far off from that concept of 60s of intense activity as a big health boost.

Not saying I'm confident in either runner, but as extreme examples of "is it pace or volume?" it has a bit of interest.

It's a bit of fun for those involved but a waste of time as real research.

First comment on the last page (3 currently) makes a very good point that you'd obviously do the fast pace at intervals to get more mileage in. That's precisely the point of intervals.

I think the reality is neither is really training for the event they want to run but one can at least ensure they can complete it if they don't get too bored with the lack of challenge in their runs.

Yes I did think about the HIIT stuff larkim but the problem is not general fitness per se, it’s the ability to run a marathon which is a very different kettle of kippers.

Maybe the fast pace guy can do 2 hour squats sessions to replicate the long run, lol.

Weight training is allowed but that would be obvious gaming of the system.
