Good idea making your own everyone. Cheaper, less packaging and waste etc. Given that I don't make my own dinner, not sure I'm likely to make gels / sports drinks! I prob only buy them 2 times per year max anyway. I know the ultra kids make a lot of their own but that's about what is palatable and you often have a range and choice in ultras cos you have no idea how you will feel at different points over 12-24 hours. Any recipes? Places to get the stuff to go in it? Matt Rees uses the soft flasks to carry it I think.

We already have a couple of soft gel-carriers that we used to decant gels into to save on dropping litter en route - also means you can have a bit and close the top (each one holds at least 2 standard gels I think which was enough for the events we used them in). But for a bigger quantity, a standard cycling (running?) water bottle also works.

HG. I’m wasn’t about “ultra kids” doing 24hrs, but about marathon runners making their own stuff, which some do. They imply they make it cheaper than Maurten, as they buy the stuff in bulk. But I’ve no idea of the recipe or where they get whatever stuff from. I confess I’m not looking at this for environmental reasons, but cost, as Maurten is quite expensive, I think.

As a self-confessed ultra kid I've happily snacked on pizza, chips, rice pudding, hot dogs, donuts and whisky in longer events. This is presumably not the type of fuelling we are talking about here. Making my own gel is tempting, not just for environmental reason but also because Raynauds means I can't open gel packets for most of the year anyway! I used to just not bother fuelling but these days I need the energy. The next long run in my plan is 2 miles so I think I'll manage for now 🤣 |

Ha yes Raynauds and autumn/winter marathons is a bad combination. I bonked on one Cornish marathon because I put down my gels in disgust (by a marshal I knew - I wasn't littering) because I couldn't open them, and then of course the blood sugar crash at mile 24 was diabolical. Lucky to finish that one!

For my sins I read some marathon-related threads on reddit, and lots of the fuelling questions are around how to fuel in training. On the one hand, I understand this in the sense of mechanically, how do I carry / consume / dispose of wrappers as a "practice" that I can replicate in the race. On the other hand, doing long or even MP runs (in my world) don't need any fuelling. I can merrily long run 20 miles, including MP sections too, without gels or water and without feeling dead on my feet at the end, providing I've fuelled sensibly before hand. When I suggest this, I'm met with two responses:- 1) How on earth do you do this, nobody can run that long without fuel or water? 2) Yes, but if you did fuel / hydrate you'd recover better and ultimately your training would be better as a consequence. How unusual am I ref response 1 (in this group, I don't think very unusual) and any thoughts about response 2? |

I’ve an entry into Cornish this weekend, Chris. Although I’m not sure I’ll be there. I pottered around a trail marathon last weekend and I kind of said to myself if it’s due to be wet this weekend, I won’t be there as I got a soaking on Sunday. It’s my club chairman’s 200th marathon at Cornish though. I would guess you came across him at Dartmoor Discovery when you did it. He’s been Chair of Trotters since 1998. I got frozen at Cornish one year. I stirred up an injury on the course which caused a lot of walking, at around the same time the wind and rain came in. The event started in reasonable conditions and I wasn’t dressed for the cold weather of the moors, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. A great race though. Reminds me of DD in terms of the nature of the course, organised by a club, etc etc. |
