Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Thanks Rog T.

Bazoaxe - I've read your Chester blogs, and then the Abingdon sub-3 one. Great reads, all of them, and a belated well done on the sub-3!

welcome Matthew. Is 3:03 = 7 min/miles, is that the target setter? Would make the pacing sums easy, and bravo on not being immediately sucked in to the next obvious target that most of us have been drawn to over the years!

Well done once again NJO, not just on the result but on a nice blog too.

Thanks Windsor Wool. I'm treating my target pace as being 6:58 (which would be a 3:02:39) but a second or two slower per miles pushes me over my arbitrary 3:03 target. It makes the maths a bit harder but I downloaded the 'race screen' data field for my watch which will do a good job of telling me if I'm on target throughout the race.

The 3:03 came from my March HM time and using the Jack Daniels VDot tables. I'm conscious that I'm not experienced when it comes to marathon training or running, so am happy to see how October goes and (fingers crossed) all being well then Manchester 2023 can be a sub-3 attempt.

Hi matthew - and best of luck with Chester. Lovely race. 3.03 target for your first marathon is fab. Hope it goes well. You've probably got faster times still in you, looking at your 5K time - but as I'm sure you know well, getting decent marathon from fast short distance ability requires the long, slog running to build the endurance, so you can sustain a pace. Best wishes for a great race. :-) G

Welcome allmatthew Just had a quick look at your times and all I will say for a first marathon the conversion from 1:27:20 half to 3:03 is far tighter than I could ever manage!! You will however have another near 7 months of training in you by then.

Do you have plans for another half before Chester? I just about managed a 1:25 half to 3:10 conversion for my first marathon!!

Good Luck

Good luck with the marathon Matthew. I've not done Chester Mara but have done the 1/2 Mara a few times.

I agree with Daz that 1:27:20 to 3:02:XX is a tough conversion but you seem to have some decent speed. If you've got a few decent 20 mile+ training runs in the bank you should have some confidence in your ability to hold the pace over the distance. Personally I would keep to 7:00min/mile pacing up to 20 miles to keep it simple, then see what you've got left at the end. Passing everyone in the last 10k is much more fun than dialling into a marathon death pace.

BTW Matthew:

I downloaded the 'race screen' data field for my watch which will do a good job of telling me if I'm on target throughout the race.

Does this take into account that the total marathon distance is likely to be >26.4 miles on your watch?

Yes, the "race screen" data field is the one that rounds up or down based on when you press the lap button on passing a mile marker, and then adjusts the average pace and last mile pace accordingly.

It's effectively the ptb manual approach but with tech to support it. Used it at Manchester this year and Chester last year to great effect.

Thanks everyone - this is where I reveal things that will make people question the sense in going for a 3:03!

Daz Love and B Rubble: The coach at my local running club put my marathon training plan together for me (he won the Snowdonia Marathon back in the day and coaches much better marathon runners than me, so I've full faith in him). The way he's structured my long runs is that there's only one 20 miler, but every single Sunday long run has MP efforts in it. So last Sunday I ran 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles at MP, one of the 18 milers will have a 4 mile, 3 mile and 2 mile block at MP etc.

I'm running the Cheshire Half Marathon on 11 September but I'm under strict instructions to run this at MP and do everything as I would do in the marathon itself, including fuelling strategy. I'm a little disappointed that I won't get a chance to improve on my 1:27 but I can see the benefit of hopefully proving to myself that I can resist the urge to be giddy in the first few miles, and run a decent distance at marathon pace.

The 'race screen' data field should taken into account that I'll end up running it a bit long - it's a fancy way of me hitting the lap button at every mile marker and it rounding the distance it shows and the average pace. It also gives me a predicted finish time, which will no doubt be more of a hindrance than a help!
