I think for all of us there's a trade-off between how much time and effort we put in, and how good we get. And we can choose where to aim on that curve. There are a lot more important and interesting things to do with your life than get really good at running, and I certainly wouldn't criticise anyone with any level of talent/potential in athletics who decided they would rather do something else instead (regardless of whether they keep on the athletic endeavours as a hobby at whatever level). |

Are you still running Edinburgh this weekend FergusG? Anyone else there? Anyone else need adding to the sidebar to declare marathon plans, be it sub 3:15 attempts or training purposes/fun? |

Cheers Lou - Hope Stoosh enjoyed Black Rock tonight. Still doing Edinburgh on Sunday, although there are two wildly different scenarios in play (depending on whether an injured woman that I’ve never met has fully recovered and is considered fit to run on Sunday)…. Scenario 1 I aim to beat last years 3:41 at Manchester, and see how close I can get to 3:30. Scenario 2 I fill in for the injured runner, and pace a first-time marathoner that I’ve known for about 25 years (but never ran with) to a 4 hour finish. I’ll also be tethered to him at the wrist, as he’s completely blind! I should find out which scenario is in play some time tomorrow. Should be a good day either way! |

Have a good one whatever the decision is Fergus - has your friend been training around Kings park? I’ve passed a runner running with a guide in recent weeks who looked in good shape! So go with the sub 3.30 plan either way 😜

Looks like he’ll be able to run with his original guide tomorrow. There’s a very slim chance I’ll get called up in the morning, but I’ll almost certainly be following my own ‘beat 3:41, and see how close I can get to 3:30’ plan. He has indeed been covering the miles all over Stirling, and he was running strong on the short ‘test run’ we tackled together this morning. BiL (Colin A) mentioned that he’s struggled to stay in front of him when doing intervals at Central Athletics! I might have my work cut out to finish ahead of them! |

I’ve come to realise that I’m embarrassingly inflexible, and I’ve got to the point that I want to try and do something about it. Basically, it’s taken a while, but I’m on it now. I’m probably going to show myself up here, but is there anything in what I’m about to say? Is it feasible/realistic to increase stride length over time by 1cm, and keeping roughly the same cadence when running? This is all very approximate but I did about 34000 strides at Seville, so if I can do 1cm per stride more, that’s 340m, which is very roughly about 90secs or so. Is there any logic in this? Is 1cm feasible? 2cm? I’ve no idea. (I know my stride length decreased in the latter stages of the race and it changes on uphills/downhills, and there are probably lots of other variables, but I am just talking very generally). |

Your stride length is unlikely to be limited by flexibility in a marathon. The reason your stride length dropped is you couldn't maintain effort, so you 'pushed' with less power and therefore you were moving slower and travelled a shorter distance through the air, even if air time might be constant. Basically get fitter and you'll run faster and therefore a combination of stride length and cadence will increase. The only caveat to the flexibility thing, is if you're so tight that your body working harder than it needs to for the speed you're running as that will mean you tire quicker. |
