I'm assuming you're doing more than running?
I've calculated based on 9mm and 180 cadence 121,500 steps per week which is 17,357 steps a day. Not a huge amount TBH when people are doing a challenge.

not much else which is a fair point. 10.2 miles tonight netted me just under 15k steps

You've got to remember they don't need to walk as far as you run to match your steps due to smaller stride length when walking. They'll just be out for longer.

I must admit that when I was involved some of the numbers being put in by some other teams were so large that I considered them outrageous to the point I could only think they were fabricated. Whole teams averaging >30k/day. Hmm.

I ran 5 miles today and walked 6. Came in at c25k steps, rather backing Baz point

Are your workmates all teenage boys Baz, with wrist worn based steps counters?

Oscar - How does that back the point? You ran 5 walked 6 and did 25k steps, Baz ran 10 miles and did 15k. You basically did the same distance yet you have 10k steps more.
I'd have thought what it shows is if you're prepared to walk miles a day, you can do loads of steps. A strategy with a bit of running and walking probably maximise time and effort.
While you might be right about cheating going on, what you have to realise is a lot of people take these step challenges seriously as a one off comp and will be constantly moving if they can to rack up the steps. Meanwhile most of us runners won't be actively trying to do more steps outside of running.

SPR - perhaps you're right, but I guess my point was that 6 miles of walking plus a run was over pushing 3 hours (the walk was very gentle). I don't normally have anywhere near that time in my day. Perhaps others are lucky enough to. Never been near a steps challenge so I wouldn't know, just happened to clock my steps yesterday.
