Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Riggsy-I'm unsure whether to come across for the half or not,it would have to be decent pb potential as it's a couple of hours drive.Hoping the paths are ok as that could be the clincher.

I think that the state of the paths could be the clincher. A few weeks ago the staff were filling some of the pot holes in near the water sports centre but the problem will be the far side of the lake

Interested in people’s view of doing a half marathon three weeks before a full.
Sheffield half is 29/3/20 and Boston Uk is 19/4/20

3 weeks is a bit tight for me, but I think I did half 4 weeks out for my marathon PB. 10K 3 weeks out? Though might actually have been 6 and 4 or something. I was pretty conservative. I'll check. I know others are happy racing pretty close. I know a good marathoner who would happily do a fast 10K a week out and 5K in the week before. But he was sub 2:30! :-) G

Riggsy - I did a half (and PB'd) 3 weeks before New York which I would have expected for me to be ok as I usually recover quick. I picked up a bug right between the 2 which I thought i had got over in time but it turns out I hadn't. I would have probably picked up the bug regardless but part of me now wonders if I had maybe worn myself down too much and therefore became more susceptible. I think i will avoid it in the future and aim for 4 weeks minimum for a full-on raced half.

riggs - that's a question frequently asked and you'll get a mixed response. I prefer to get my longest / hardest long run in 3 weeks before and so try and avoid HMs scheduled like that. Last time around I broke my rule though and ran my local HM 3 weeks before Abingdon. It actually turned out to be my best ever HM and I did then run a PB at Abingdon. Maybe I'd have run faster if I'd done something different but we'll never know!

Along with the concerns about recovery, if you do race 3 weeks out and follow a conventional taper then it's likely that come mara day you won't have done a LR for 4 weeks. Depends if that bothers you.

A couple of years ago I ran a parkrun PB 8 days before VLM. I wouldn't do that again although plenty of folks do like a last sharpener and will argue that you can recover easily from a 5k in that period. Risk of injury is my main concern nowadays (more cognizant of this the older I get).

Little clarity there. Sorry.

I ran this morning. 3 weeks post mara I am a very different runner than I was 3 weeks prior! Patience.....

Back on the turbo for me last night. Saturday cruised around parkrun twice, bringing total mileage for the week to a humoungous 17 with runs on Sun, Mon, Wed and then Saturday. Could feel the niggly calf on Saturday pm, so no running Sunday or Monday, being cautious. Might stick to turbo for the rest of this week, which is a depressing thought, but don't want to push the calf into anything it can't handle. I need to reassure myself that even if I don't get running properly until mid December, that's still plenty of time to commit for Manchester with a plan starting early in the New Year.

To add my comment above, I did my last long run on the Tuesday following the half marathon. In hindsight it probably made that week too demanding.
