Actually, as it happens for the first time in about 12 months I'm wearing calf sleeves as I type this sat at my desk. I know a lot of people swear by them for recovery, so giving that a go for a few days.

Ankle feels significantly better today after a night of icing and compression...almost back to where it was on Sunday. For a change I have my sensible hat on and I wont be running on it for a few days at least

I've never tried compression gear. Not sure I'd like it. And fortunately never needed it. I agree about using whatever works for you though. And I also agree that cramping, among many other running issues, both good and bad, is not well understood. Or certainly seems complex enough to be difficult to give a single, simple answer or recommendation.

Which is why it's so much fun to chat about and hear everyone's different experiences and views!

Hope the calf guards help larks. If not, maybe give foam roller a go? Nothing too extreme though. As we discussed on another thread, mid campaign is probably not best time to try something new.

Great news Bazo. Hopefully you've caught it and going a bit easy will mean you can shake it completely.

Wee lunch time plod for me. Enjoyable run. I have found a new way to gauge recovery effort - if you can smile at everyone (i.e. be breathing only through your nose with your mouth closed) then it must be easy. And enjoyable? :-) G

Hi, I am in 2 minds about compression gear

I used to suffer with calf cramp and bought compression socks. Cramp only ever happened late in a marathon and not always. After 3-4 marathons with the socks I had a 50/50 rate of cramp and since ditched them. My ratio now is probably better, but my conclusion is that the cramp arises when I have aimed for a time I my training does not justify.

I now wear my compression sock overnight if I feel any lower leg niggles and I seem to find it quite effective

I also have skins compression tights which I generally wear after a marathon and maybe a half if my legs feel trashed. I don't believe they actually work though

I'm sufficiently vain and "old skool" in my head that I wouldn't be seen dead in tights, compression or otherwise!

I do dabble with foam rollering every now and again, so that's not particularly a new thing - I just wish it was easier to achieve something on calves with my flimsy arms!

So, are you coming round to general strength (including upper body) then larks?! ;-)

I'm lucky, I started with rugby aged 12 - 21, then general weights in gym, then moved to mountain biking (still required a bit of upper body and core strength) and only came to running as I approached 40. I was already doing 3 days a week in gym and just built the running around it.

Any time the S&C work has lapsed has coincided with a running injury. Thenrehab / trying to maintain my cardio fitness picks the gym back up and all is well until I do too much run vs. not enough other stuff. Just a sample of 1 here though. :-) G

I think my wife would have significantly preferred me to have taken up something which resulted in a toned upper body, but I remain resistant!

I've only done 1 triathlon. It was just a sprint tri. I did it when I had a long term running injury. Because triathlon is just for broken runners.

Anyway, my lovely wife came along to support. Her only comment on my triumphant performance? "Why don't you do triathlon? They're all really buff looking." Thanks dear. :-) G

Supportive types, wives ;-)

I'm loathe to say this too loudly, but I do find it impressive that my wife's well toned, slim and attractive figure with a BMI under 20 struggles to run anywhere near on a par with my 25 BMI, flabby, poorly toned figure. I wonder how I would respond if the tables were turned??

It's all about priorities, innit?

Almost 28 BMI for me but I am 'dense'. That's my excuse. :-)
