Personally 80mi per week is probably enough to get a sub 2:40 time, as long as you have a good base beforehand and dont skimp on the Long Runs and MP sessions.
I'm planning a sub 2:37 (5:59 p/mile) for Berlin in October. My current outline plan is to do 75mi pw until end of May to build a good base and some endurance. Then by time I start proper 18 week plan, Ill be able to do the three sessions per week. Sounds good in my head anyway 😁

55 miles per week for my 2.40. 80 should be ample. It's what you do with those miles that count.
I always need a day off in the week, just perks me up. Good luck with the training Damo.
Just to mix things up further I never did any miles a MP either lol

Nick Torry did an interview with Marathon Talk years back after running about 2:15 at London and I think he said his peak mileage was 75-80ish a week as he felt that was optimal in his case, he could have done more but his previous training suggested it was counterproductive.
I think 2:40 off 55 miles per week (before the era of magic shoes) would be an outlier, regardless of how you spent the 55 miles. Hats off Jock.
You can put two runners through all of the same workouts for a few months and not see anything like the same result - we’re all a product of far more than the 18-20 weeks before the marathon.
More interesting to see what difference it makes in one runner (or more) when they change from say 55 miles a week to 80 miles a week.
I went from 2:50 off 35 miles a week to 2:30 off 65 miles a week in 12 months but I think shoes took care of 6 minutes of that improvement.

What Jock said.
You can run 80 a week, but if they are all the same pace, it might hurt. Mix it up.

My Mon/Wed/Fri are my gentle recovery runs with the dog, does that count as mixing it up?

Thanks - the low mileage 2:50 was not how I planned it, was managing an injury and restricted to 3 runs a week as achilles needed ages to recover after each run.
Was living off previous fitness gains from old training blocks a bit, though I'd never maintained 50+ miles a week for long (until I turned 40 and really changed out of sight with my training)

fuzzyduck79, your 3 runs per week must have been pretty effective ones.
