I take gels in HMs. I think many of us are sold on the benefits of caffeine and so I find a caffeine gel 20 mins before the gun and one at maybe 5 -> 7 miles to be a really convenient way of doing that. Could be placebo but I find myself actively looking forward to the mid-race gel so I’m unlikely to stop doing it.

I'm running the Great Manchester Run on Sunday and am quietly (confident) of a sub-90 min. I've also a club session tomorrow night of 12 x 90 secs with 60 secs recovery.

A bit of a difficult question, but how much can be read into that session with regards to a possible time in the half? For example, the Fetch training pace calculator that says if I were aiming for a 1:27 then I should be running 400m in 1:23. That's certainly doable, but maybe not for 12 reps.

Perhaps it's a moot point, as I know what pace I'll be aiming at for the first 7 miles and then will see how it feels, but it would be nice to get to the end tomorrow's session in a positive frame of mind!

I certainly couldn't convert meaningfully from 400m speed to HM!

Agree. My 400 pace is better than anything an algorithm thinks I can convert it to.

I think the calculator isn't meant to predict your best 400 m pace but rather what is sustainable for a interval session. Based on my marathon, it says 1:33 which may be possible for 8-10 reps but the Jack Daniels calculator suggests 1:36 or 1:43, depending on if I go for intervals or reps. I'd probably aim for 1:36 which would be about vVO2max for me with longer recoveries. 1:43 sounds more like cruise intervals with shorter recoveries to me.
When I raced a team mate last year, I clocked a 1:26 and that was after 4 reps around 1:36 so my true 400 m pace for a 1x max effort is probably even faster than that.

My reps pace is usually 90 seconds or just under for 10 reps, standing equal recovery. But rolling intervals is around 100 secs or just under.

Jack Daniels has 400m intervals at between 88 and 90 seconds, which is certainly more sustainable than the 83 seconds of the Fetch calculator. Interesting to see how they compare, even if they're not quite doing the same things.

One thing is for sure is that I won't be setting off at 83 second pace tomorrow evening!

I haven't read it for a while but IIRC JD is quite precise about the intervals being at the correct speed, not necessarily as fast as can be managed for the session.

Tentative sub 1:30 attempt this weekend for me at Warrington. Weather is looking a bit blowy though and the new course a bit twisty and occasionally off-tarmac for my liking, but will give it a go.

(Sorry, can't help ref Valencia)
