My first owned home PC was also my first job. This was not a coincidence. After graduating in electronic engineering, I was into computers, and while I wanted money, I also wanted to stay local to Edinburgh as I had just moved in with my girlfriend (future wife). So I binned the London based graduate job applications and looked locally. An entrepreneur had just set up a PC "clone" building business in an industrial estate 10 miles away! So I got a job there. I got a PC with a small discount (but not much) and some upgrades. 1991. It was £2,000 and my salary was £12,000 gross, I think, so maybe £700 net a month. So 3 months' salary?! I wrote a blog about it once. G |

I got one in 1999 because the ed psych who told us that Kevin definitely didn't have Asperger syndrome also expressed horror that she didn't have access to a computer at home. We ended up having to manage her chat room addiction.

EP, my first PC was a Tiny but I can't remember how much I paid for it. I had issues when they claimed it had an Intel chip in it and my neighbour when upgrading my chip found it was AMD...hubby had fun with them!

I worked at Utrecht museum and got my wages weekly in a brown envelope. My first PC was as a student. My mother brought it back from the university she worked at. The first portable computer! A Compaq. No internet... My own desktop computer came a year or two later. It was equipped with an external modem. You would call the recipient, then you'd both turn your modems on to communicate directly. There was a lot of magic and fingers crossed involved in the sending of texts. |
