flying to Singapore for work was like a mini holiday - big comfy seat, endless food and snacks, film of my choice, sleep. No kids.

A surgeon at our yoga class was telling us a few weeks ago he had to go to Colombia to show them a procedure, they were gonnae give him a day to do it then fly home, he’s like feck that I want a week there. That’s fair enough imho.

Oddly I hated the short day trip flights (UK or Europe) the most. Meeting preceeded by home to airport, airport, too short a flight to properly relax, airport, transfer to office then the exact reverse (usually with a mad dash to make the flight) after. Really tiring day, with a miserable 'I haven't actually been outside in fresh air and have eaten shit all day' feel to it.

Long haul flight trip tips :- - as per cath, choose a good seat. Ideally bulkhead or exit if you can get it - Economy Plus, however it's labelled is a big step up from economy. And if a frequent traveller boosts your chances for a further upgrade - If you get the choice, split out and return flights over a month end. That way you get a new set of films and TV progs for the return flight - Dowlnload a few iplayer (or any other stream/download option) box sets of series you'd quite like to watch again - Book a taxi or some other transport for the drive after the flight

Whereas in serious 'retirement' news, I used my free bus pass today. The first time since I got it. For the return to Hayle after walking to St Ives.

A bus pass is no use here. No public transport...

I've used my bus pass loads over the winter, but now it's Spring I'll have no excuse not to use my bike for trips into town.

I have been thinking that, come retirement, I might set up a community car share thing. We have community transport but it is to drive people to the drs, hospital etc Something you can use just to say, go to Hay Market Thursday morning would be good.

That sounds like a lovely idea, Hanneke.
Mr Ness hasn't applied for his bus pass yet. Says he'd rather walk in to town instead. Still think he'd find it useful occasionally.

Yes, hubby had to go to China for work - so made it into a week. Second time around, it was 2 weeks and I came along - Beijing and Shanghai.
Same with the US - San Diego, then Chicago for 2 weeks, I came along on that one...partway through Chicago (Schaumberg...) he had to go to Colorado, so he flew out there for a couple days, just him, while I hung out in the hotel.
We paid for my flights, hotels I sorted out for the US - it's room only there, not per person.
We always do a taxi service to and from airport - we're close to Heathrow (35-40 min in good traffic). Unfortunately it's been increasing yearly...but still far cheaper than long stay carpark.
Bulkhead seats can be hit or miss, as they put babies' cots there, so can be very loud! Noise isolating headphones are very good for those overnight flights where sleep is wanted...
