Aren't the last few miles of a marathon supposed to be horrible?

11:22 ish, for a sub 5, would say your training so far hints it should be a good target

Aren't the last few miles of a marathon supposed to be horrible? I have done 3 road marathons and yes, the last few miles in all of them where absolute agony! |

I've done lots of road marathons. Some have been fine throughout and I could have kept going at the end, most have had a bad patch somewhere along the way, and a few have included the full "hitting the wall" experience, including the most recent one I did, when I was like, "This is fine, this is fine, I can keep this up till the end ... thwack!" When I've had a real horror of a marathon there's always been an obvious explanation such as failure to train for it or setting off at a pace that my training didn't justify.

Thanks, Rosehip, Vrap and Hanneke. Your experience gives me better insight into what to expect.

I put your Asby 20 time into the MCmillan calculator and it gave you 4:32 or thereabouts - except that Imposted the garbled results on the 100 mam thread 🙄 The calculator on here is probably more realistic - gives you 4:55 from your leicester time and that’s ages ago! |

Thanks, Rosehip. I've had a minor injury / niggle since then, but, in my view, that was mainly self inflicted by wearing running shoes that were too old so won't be doing that again! Hopefully training will continue to go well. 🤞 I'd be very happy with 4:55! Excuse me hogging the thread. I'll let you get back to other retirement stuff. x |
