I don't know whether they are still available but when my father in law moved into a care home we purchased a lifetime care contract. In return for a lump sum upfront it guaranteed to pay his fees as long as he lived and hence my wife's residual inheritance amount was guaranteed. The care home also benefits as they know their fees will be paid.
In fact as it turned out he died just before the 2 years 'breakeven' assumed in the contract so the transaction resulted in a small loss, but we don't regret doing it.

Goodness, what an odd reaction!
The issues with aging parentals are very much a retirement topic - for those of us lucky enough to still have them.
We’re about halfway between our mothers at the moment, much as we want to retire to somewhere north it would be difficult to be further than an hour or so away from either.

I think L&G at least still do them, we were in the process of investigating for dad when it became apparent it wouldn’t be worthwhile

To be honest, we got a similar(ish) reaction/threat from Liebling's mum.
Though it was more, 'I know my children will never move away from this area' emotional blackmail type thing.

My mum used to complain that she didn’t see her grandchildren enough but seemed to misunderstand she was the one that had moved further away!

My mother told me that the care co-ordinator had said she was the first old person she'd ever encountered who didn't have family living locally. She can be a manipulative old rascal when it suits her. As eL Bee! said last time we visited, it is SUCH a relief to see her being difficult again.

And a sign that she still has all her marbles, which was a concern when she first came out of hospital last year and was a little confused old lady fretting over and over again about the pills in her blister packs.
