Having a mortgage based on two incomes and having to fund it from one income after a few years while the former bearer of the second income is still a gaping mouth to feed isn't a bundle of laughs.

I got my retirement letter from HR today confirming I'm finishing on 31st December (whoops - middle of winter ) Mind you, they don't seem to know their own policies and are trying to do me out of 2 days retirement wind down allowance by calculating from the start of my 6 month wind down period (39y7m service) rather than my retirement date (40y1m service) |

Good new about the retirement, TR. I hope the finer details are easily sorted.

Good news, TR. I’ve been doing some sums today and am more or less of the mind to shift gears a little. I was going ‘hell for leather’ on overpaying my mortgage, but I’m now thinking of just paying off the smaller one (two mortgages - long story) and then spending the next 3 years piling the overpayment money into my pension instead. I can still take lumps off the mortgage with shares - once they have recovered a bit! This thread is an excellent source of information. |

You're all very OAPist My lunchtime swim has been ruined now you've all started wfh or hybrid working My retirement plan was always to buy a tractor with a top speed of about 20mph and drive it into Cambridge at 8:30 each morning causing a several mile tail back, because the local farmers only seemed to manage to do that about one day in three. But with so many people WFH, there's barely any traffic, so it hardly seems worth the bother. |

Funny story: as a kid we were driving to Snowdonia for a family holiday, and just as we hit the single lane roads we got stuck in a massive queue, trundling along at 25mph. My old man was getting more and more steamed up, swearing and cursing as the minutes slipped by. Gradually we moved up the queue as cars slowly got their chance to overtake the pitifully slow vehicle. When we got a few cars back we could finally see what was causing the slow traffic - not a tractor, or caravan but my grandad (old man’s father) who was a VERY slow driver. They were heading to the same place for the family holiday, but to hear my old man turn the air blue for 30 minutes before finding out it was his father causing the delay was very funny ‘it’s f£&king Dad!’ still makes me smile now. |
