Because I've been working lots lately I've decided that I'm going to have a long break (6 weeks or so) in the autumn. A bit like a trial retirement. I might then go back full time, I might go back part time, I might not go back at all...

With the contracting work that I do I could do that. I feel that I'm a bit of an all or nothing person, out then back might not suit me. Might give it a go though. Good luck HT. Enjoy! G

You never taken breaks between contracts through choice before Happy. Had a few that we have used over the years that were always happy to have a 3 month break before finding something else!!

No Daz, not through choice. Longest gaps 3 or 4 weeks due to contracts not lining up. Was never welcome and not relaxing. Working 8 hrs a day trying to get next gig. A break by choice eg 6 months, might be nice. G

Been out with brother and his partner, chatting about retirement plans and she said they are desperate for a decent engineer and said to my OH pack in and come and contract for us… so not even at that point yet and he has potential other work options.

Once I stopped work I was offered quite a few bits and pieces of work, from full time to part time and not just in accounts. I've never shown the slightest bit of interest in working again so all offers were out of the blue. One guy even tried to recruit me to apply for a job in the gym.

Hello guys. Been stalking a while. Retired almost 6 years ago at 55 and not returned since, although I have generated some extra income through property related projects. Coming from a busy job I struggled at first and felt some guilt, especially at first when 55/56. Now have no trouble filling my days and love the freedom and flexibility especiallyin summer. Mainly I do training (run swim or bike, every day) some volunteering, and lots of DIY for us and my offspring. Now my wife has retired too so more travelling, including parkrun tourism. Should reach 500 parkruns around Christmas. Finances are tighter but we spend less. Also state pension to look forward too. It's great for those with a part time work option to ease down gently. The problem of course is less flexibility, so there is a trade off. |

Welcome 0061. The state pension is an interesting one. The current model - triple lock, universal is clearly unsustainable even with the age creeping out. I’ve run my retirement calcs with it being means tested by the time I get there (most likely change IMO) and whilst it’ll sting a bit life will still be pretty decent. |
