Aye, parents! My dad does pretty well but it's a struggle to get him to translate "your risk of getting dementia is higher if you don't wear your hearing aids" into bothering to put the damn things in his lugholes every time he goes out.

Yes, deafness in old age increases the risk of dementia. It's not difficult to see how that might happen.

We've sort of finally officially retired as of about yesterday. Not really been working much for a while now, just finishing off a contract, the money was paid some time ago but we promised to complete a piece of work and send off to a journal which I finally did on Friday. There will be some more odds and ends to tidy up depending on reviewer comments etc but we haven't been looking for new contracts and unless someone beats our door down with a really exciting offer we'll not be doing any more.

Can't say it feels that different as we hadn't really been working properly for most of the past year or two, but it's nice to tick a tedious job off the list. I enjoyed being a scientist but don't really feel any burning motivation to explore new ideas and there are plenty of younger scientists who can do that. We had a couple of friends visit last month who work in the same area (and v similar age) and talking to them about their work plans just didn't sound interesting. New project, new supercomputer, but doing the same sort of stuff.

I guess the bit that I try to get my head around regarding this 'ultra marathons and triathlons are bad for you' health thing is looking at the entire thing.

Yes I know the extremity of it has some bad effects (like with 99% of any medicine there are some side effects) but my pursuit of these things has seen me give up alcohol 15 years ago, eat healthily and have weight on point. It has also give me amazing zest for life/travel/learning, a hugely enlarged social circle and a fantastic feeling of well being.

I thus conclude I'm up on the deal overall healthwise, physically and mentally. I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I dismiss all these 'Ironman triathlons are bad for you' and carry on based on this logic.....

Pix, it must be MrPix's opportunity to learn to cook from scratch - maybe burgers for starters.

Exciting times TRO and congratulations jda. :)
