And also, statistics, TRO. Damned statistics. (I'm happy never to do another ultramarathon because I have neither the talent nor the attention span for them, but nobody's getting to make me scared of a loaf of supermarket bread.) |

'ultra marathons and triathlons are bad for you' It depends on the counterfactual. For the vast majority of people, doing more exercise than they currently do would be hugely beneficial. However it's possible that a small proportion of people go to a sufficiently extreme level that they start to cause a significant risk of harm. Elsewhere on this site Canute has written a fair bit about this. My take-home is that unless you're really quite obsessive and driven, it's very unlikely you are doing yourself any harm. Perhaps a regular keen ironman competitor should be careful but they are surely better off than a couch potato anyway. |

I quite like the idea of properly training for a fast (for me) marathon when I retire

I was chatting with a guy yesterday about retirement. His dad retired at 52 and he’s about to turn 90. It gave me hope that retiring early doesn’t always mean dying early - I’m sure it helped that he had a very handsome DB pension, so no money worries, from what i could gather, so he and his wife did lots of travelling / going on holidays.
