Persevere. I had to do that with R13 but it was worth it. Milkman is equally worth the effort, and perhaps more ambitious and original.

I have one of Jon MacGregor’s earlier books on the shelf (charity shop find) but can’t remember which one. It may very well be If nobody speaks... Did really enjoy Reservoir 13 so should check it out at some point.

Milkman is definitely more ambitious than R13. One of the books of last year for me, though I thought Washington Black should have won the Booker Prize.

Milkman is really good. I read a library copy, but want to get one of my own.

Returned the Angry Planet to the library, and took out Conversations with Friends, which I shall take with me next week (family holiday in the Channel Islands) as Karamazov is a bit heavy for holiday reading.

Anyone here read Bill Bryson’s The Road To Little Dribbling? It’s very funny, but I mention it here because in the first couple of chapters he’s visited Bognor and then travelled by bus to Hove, followed by walking the Seven Sisters to Eastbourne, right up our street.

Just finished The Search by Geoff Dyer, part of my current Dyer obsession. A very, very strange book and ultimately hollow but... it must have had something because I started it last night and finished it tonight, in pretty much two sittings (though it is very short)

Intriguingly I have located some unread William Boyds on one of the many TBR piles (Any Human Heart and Restless) so one of those might be the next choice. I was slightly dismissive of The New Confessions when Dio chose it but my memory of it has warmed quite a bit.

I like AHH v much, and Restless is interesting and entertaining, but not anything special.

I’ve given Mrs Dalloway the cold shoulder fog the time being and hooked up with The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy.
