Thinking about new tyres, what should I look for? I mainly do blue downhill tracks and cross country, riding mainly in the dry.

I would say skinny as you can get but if my recent experience is anything to go by you'll be lucky to get anything much narrower than 2"

I’m a big fan of Spesh tyres. Butcher on the front. Purgatory on the rear. I tried everyone’s favourite on a bike a while back - Maxxis high rollers - and found the rolling resistance just too depressing for me. The rolling resistance on the Spesh tyres is unfathomly good.

I hate Maxxis tyres!
But I have been out of it for so long, * can't really advise on anything.

I’ll give my standard Nobby Nics answer 😉 My go to tyre. If you can get any. But realistically there are very few bad tyres out there now. Well, cheap tyres are still shite but that’s why they are cheap.

Cool, thanks. What should be considered "cheap"?

As a very rough guide, I’d say anything that is less than £30 RRP - before any discount. And anything that says ‘wired’. Ideally you want folding and tubeless ready. If you’re not tubeless yet, you may be well advised to go that route - particularly if you’re doing downhill stuff.

Yeah, I wondered about going tubeless at the same time. That's about the price tag I had in mind anyway. I thought up to £80 for the pair.

See what you can find then. It's horrendous for parts and will stay that way for a while. I look at lovely things in my Schwalbe catalogue, talk to my Schwalbe guy and then see what they actually have in stock.

Apparently there's more stuff in 29er and narrower sizes because chunky is trendy currently.

Narrower = good
29er = wasbeen trendy shite

Unapologetic for being staunchly untrendy (and thus saving myself a small fortune over the last 20 years). Looking forward to the 2024 reinvention of the 26er. I am so far ahead of that trend it hurts! ;)

Since the last appearance of Kaph, some time ago... there are now three wheel sizes, and now new plus (+) tyres for the even more adventurous!

26 / 27.5 (650b) / 29 / 27.5+ (650b+) / 29+ / fat
whatever you ride, enjoy it :)

Gravel also welcome :)

Also, is 26 dead yet?
