Whereas I need a shorter reach for my height :)

''wrong'' geometry was put on '''' fr a reason... we are all diferent. I do think Whyte bikes are a bit marmite.

"Whereas I need a shorter reach for my height"

I was the opposite on my roadie - my focus has a frame that's, in theory, too short form my height, but it works out nicely as the problem wasn't the frame, it was the reach, so a 140mm solved that problem

I actually struggle a bit on my Trek - in theory it's the right size for me, but it 'feels' a bit big.

I mainly use it for commuting though.

Stem length is more of a factor on a MTB as it effects the steering - combined with head angle, which is much more of an issue when you’re trying to weave through Singletrack / trees.

Most stems on bikes these days are 50mm or less.

Okay, think I get it.

It's a personal thing, combining physical attributes with a certain amount of "preference", and also depending on what you do or want to do on the bike.

I'll have to wait and see on that one. Not sure I ride an MTB enough for it to make a great deal of difference to me, and the really technical gnarly stuff is not my bag either. Give me Mastiles Lane or Cam High Road any time over boardwalk, drop offs and bloody great tree roots.

But I'm ostensibly a roadie who dabbles in MTB occasionally. I'm really not very good at the technical stuff.

And I'm too old for all that "falling off" bollocks. It hurts, and I don't bounce like I used to.

Cath - you have seen the stem on my bike the fork just makes it LONG and a little weird. Had a good ride on it ladt night mind.

Han - 24s took their toll on my body but I want to stay largely rigid so Lauf was an attempt at compromise.

Ah, I see! Does it work as a compromise,? I really don't get on with them... So for me, I have a fully rigid Ti 29er and now an e-MTB on which I have fitted my old fox forks. They can be locked out to varying degrees which seems to work. Fully rigid only for road and gravel and the occasional forays off road, but it kills my dodgy should if there are too many bumps.
E-bike rides like a lump of concrete but hey ho, it gets me out... Without hurting my knee or pushing all the time things go up.

Jury is out Han, have you ridden one? It was a lot of money if it doesnt do what I want :¬)

Lovely on gravel and trails but not so happy when it is techy. There is something predictable I like about a rigid fork which I am losing with the Lauf.

Still needs more time so shall keep training on it for now and we shall see,
