I have a vitus but it isn't a MTB because I don't do that sort of thing (not actually sure why I'm still watching this thread!)

I've just purchased a new Whyte 629 v3. Never had a Whyte before, or a 1X. So far so good. Just bedding it in at the moment, prior to it's post eight ride health check, but then expecting to get out on the trails round here. Never had one with such a range of gears before. Not interested in going fast downhill, too much of a wuss for that these days. The climbing is the thing. Yorkshire Dales climbs can be "reet bastards".. Just need to sort my climbing legs out now. Oh, and lose half a stone. (Worth a look at Whyte. Seems like decent kit at a decent price. This one slightly more that a thou, but they do do ones at less. Got this from Escape Cycles at Ingleton. Wheelbase and Chevin didn't have any in stock.) |

A couple of other options........ Boardman are generally thought of as good value for money, their hardtails are the MHT range, they've got 2 under £1k, one at £700 and one at £925 boardmanbikes.com Decathlon also decent value, and have a few under £1k decathlon.co.uk |

You can’t go too wrong with most ‘big brands’, like Trek, Specialized, Giant, Scott. Whyte are not quite a big brand, but have a fairly good following and are a UK company.

Interestingly I was warned off Whyte. And Boardman's don't fit me. I wanted to get one of their road bikes but all the frames were *far* too small. I imagine their MTBs will be similar. I ended up with a focus road bike which I think is great. I'd happily have one of the Focus Whistlers, but can't see them in stock in the UK in many places. Q do all MTBs now have single speed cranksets? |

Pretty much, yes. 1x12 is the standard, but you might find 1x11 on more budget ranges. I’d avoid anything 1x10, but I doubt those are around still.

See when I last bought an MTB, it was about having wide a range of gearing - what's the thinking of single speed?

*waits for Steppie to come in and mutter something about bike sales and marketing* Mostly simplicity. Front mechs can be real mud traps on MTBs. It also opens up frame design for manufacturers if they don’t have to allow for a front mech. Once we got 12 speed technology, the overlap on a 2x system made it a bit redundant as you don’t need the same breadth of gearing as on a road bike. The compromise is they can be limited on day road use as you run out of ‘hard’ gears to push against. |

Yes, I just ran out of hard gears on the MTB. It is an e-bike, to make up for my knee not allowing me to ride uphill over a gradient of 7%. Bit of a bummer around here, as it is very up and down, especially off road! I bought a Cube and am very pleased with it. Mine us a medium and pretty sure they go to XL... The geometry suits out tall and gangly fisiques Fozzy, so have a look? |
