Someone I emailed last week is going up as part of the ceremonial procession (they get to march along the route in no 1 uniform with medals etc - as opposed to just doing crowd control or whatever).
I helped them with organising something they’ll need on the day so I suppose I’ve made my little contribution to Op Golden Orb
Much as I increasingly hold republican sympathies, I do think that the protesters should knock it off for the day. Holding up placards about not being my king is all well and good but there's a time and a place. Let the monarchists enjoy their big event. That said, I also think that the police should just lead away any protesters who do show up. Arresting and charging people for basically being a dick is a little OTT imho.
If an American President dies in office the replacement is sworn in and that’s more or less it. They can even elect a new Pope without bringing the world to a halt. We “could” choose to do a very low key technical coronation or no coronation at all, but instead we have to suffer this wretched medieval cavalcade. We aren’t a serious country anymore. That is known, and this is just one more data point in the path of our decline. Golden carriages and food banks. I think Saturday is the perfect time to peacefully protest, given that the entire country is about to grind to a halt so that one man gets his day in the sun.
I'm getting increasing angry by everything I see about this farce, by the bunting and the flags, by the coverage and the fawning, and by the anti-democratic measures being put in place. It makes me want to take part in a noisy hostile demonstration.
So I sit down to enjoy a quick lunch and put the telly on to the news for a bit of background noise. Both Sky and the Beeb: breaking news! Royals visit a pub in Soho!
Memories of the public and media hysteria from the Jubilee and the queen’s death. Lovely for some and a great distraction from the financial crisis so plays directly into the government’s hands.
FFS how many free hits do the Royalists get? The jubilee, and the funeral "weren't the right time". This is absolutely the right time to remind people of just what sort of person they will all be saying "May the King love forever" to.
Whenever I see pictures of Diana's funeral all I see are two young boys being made to march behind their mothers coffin past crowds of hysterical nitwits. No father worthy of the name should have allowed that. No matter what anyone said. It was the worst sort of cruelty that I've personally never forgotten.
The only slight bright spot is that Harry is going to be there pissing on his chips...
