Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I tagged a couple of predictive text type threads with "predictive". I went to tag another one and it found no Related Threads at all. I see the earlier tags have been changed to "prediction". That would be fine, but they've now got confused with race time prediction threads. Any objections to reverting to "predictive"?

I think I might have been the one to splat 'predictive', sorry. I was struggling to think of more than one thread where it would be relevant. But I don't mind if you want to put it back, and I'll try to keep my mitts off. Taggers gon' tag :-)

Regarding the questions about how many people will be able to tag...

the 'free-for-all' approach has been tried before, and resulted in quite a few jokey tags and a wide range of synonyms, pluralisations and spellings - so the overall effect was not especially effective. So I'm not keen on going back there.

That said, if there's anyone who *wants* to be a tagger, I'd be happy to add them. It can't be a clique if you can join just by putting your hand up :-)

I like the idea of thread creators being able to add tags, but I think it might then cause work for the tag team if the creator (of which there are many: 7785 threads created by 1473 Fetchies) goes off-piste with their tagging, and potentially conflict if the creator has strong opinions.

For non-taggers, I've moved the tag list for a thread into the 'Related Threads' box now. It was up top initially because I wanted to illustrate to forum readers that the tags were now a thing - and to encourage them to check out the RT box. But given that the main purpose of each page is to provide the information in the actual thread itself, the tags in the topper were serving to push the main content down the page, which is something I try to guard against.

All sounds good to me Fetch. I think a team of taggers will generate a better long term consistency. And, if yesterday is an example, a very quick response.

Would still appreciate the year of the last post in the related list though?
And very cheekily, sorted into year order (eg 700 thread wrong date order upsets my logical mind). But I'm fussy ;-)

And I do like the 'agile & involved & feedback' approach to development and changes.

Sounds good!

As I think I mentioned a few pages back, I have been using "archive" on some threads. Typically this is where there is a very specific request, for example for a request for a lift to a race in a certain year or a request for a spare place in an event in a specific year. Also where a specific "for sale" thread has been completed and closed off.

I haven't used it where I there may be any likelihood *at all* of interest in the thread, even where there is only a single comment about a race or a watch or a shoe in, say, 2012, as that could still be of interest (and hopefully will link to any other present or future other threads about that race or watch or shoe). So I am using it with caution.

Is there a plan to clear out such threads? Or will they sit there and simply not draw attention to themselves by having no live Related Threads (other than their sad co-archived stubs and dead and accidental threads!)?

I think it’s been mentioned before, but if anyone wants a rabbit hole to go down, there are a lot of race threads out there that aren’t appearing in the untagged list because they were autotagged, sometimes only with the year. So it’s worth doing a search for threads that mention a particular race or place name looking for threads that need attention.

I spent a bit of time on Edinburgh last night and started looking at 50/100 milers.
