Sounds like you have grounds for a grievance there. Do you know your grievance procedure?

Do you have student reps? Has anyone complained to the course leader? Sorry if you've answered these before.

Our student rep is useless 😔 that's why a group of us took it to the pdt team. Atm we're hopeful that the meeting between uni and pdt then with ourselves will rectify things. Some things have appeared now on canvas and emails are now being answered. Been told just now that someone has been employed to replace missing staff member but they need to work their notice. Course leader was really good yesterday tbf so 🤞

Good luck EB, hopefully if you make enough noise change will happen. Sounds like they are putting you through a lot of crap though.
To the lecturers / researchers, a question if I may - Would you enter the profession now given the chance?

Oh gosh, Sam. That's a hard one. I've only been in the profession since 2012 and only full time since 2015.
It's a great job, but the workload and expectations are brutal. My work/life balance is up the spout more than I have ever experienced in industry. My experience is UK-specific, though. It's different elsewhere and there are variations depending on what type of an institution you are in and sometimes even which faculty. I'm in a post-92 with massive pressure on budgets and also in a subject that is constantly under threat. I *think* I still would, as I enjoy it much more than I did my work in industry.

Hi Sam. I became a lecturer in 2016. Most of my senior colleagues said at the time that they wouldn't even be employed now because they didn't have the papers/teaching quals/funding then that is required now to get a permanent post.
I think on balance they'd mostly do the same (if they could), but people are getting more burnt out and more are retiring at normal retirement age or voluntary redundancy than before.
It's very institution and subject dependent, and certainly the Head of Department you have can make all the difference (good or bad). Despite the pressures, I can't actually imagine doing anything else. I get the impression that industry is considerably less stressful and more sensible hours, but I like the flexibility and interaction with students.
Whenever I randomly tot up my hours I always get over 45 (sometimes 50), but there is a lot of flexibility. I always liken it to being self-employed and employed at the same time, some of the benefits (salary, pension, flexibility, independence) and some of the downsides (long hours, no-one to cover, marking, self-motivation) to both.
This is probably the worst week to ask though, I'm at the "just get to the end of the day and you're finished for the year" stage (although I still have marking to do, the teaching will be over and my life will be more my own again.

thanks both. There is a position open that I am interested in, and after 8 years in industry there is certainly a lure back towards academia... There are certainly things against it (salary, move back to the uk etc.) and the application deadline is monday so I am trying to make that decision really.

Sam I started in a role 8 weeks ago and so far I'm loving it. I know it's early days and my workload will ramp up, but I don't regret leaving the NHS yet. Although it was only when I started the new one that I realised how broken I was from my old one!

EB that sounds shocking! I know the course you're on is new and somethings can't be helped, but from what you've said there are quite catastrophic basic failings there.
