I wish I'd read this thread yesterday when teen was struggling with his maths. McGoo, are you generally open for business?

A lot of these (he said, in a sweeping generalisation) maths problems aren't as hard as they first seem. IIRC often it's all about substitution.
Generally you are substituting and rearranging the knowns to simplify at each stage.

Maths gradually left me behind as it changed from being numbers to being letters and symbols. I was able to get individual concepts and techniques with coaching and practice and just squeaked through the Higher then forget everything apart from how to count.

I used to love those sorts of problems! They way they just sort of slot into place at the end. Differential integrals was my limit I think. Or am I making those up?

I am not ashamed to say that I have absolutely no idea what any of you are talking about. OH and all 3 of my children ‘got’ maths but I never did, beyond what I need to function day to day.
