Doesn't sound financially greener for sure. What subject do you lecture in?

I think that's a good idea, Sam. Universities are often really happy to have industry people come in and lecture on an hourly-paid basis. It adds a lot of credibility to a course. They might even just want a one-off for starters.

My first PhD student has her viva on Thu! Any advice on how to keep myself occupied while I await the outcome? (I think I'm more nervous than I otherwise would be having failed the only student who I've done a viva for).

I think my supervisor was more nervous than I was before my viva, which I found amazing as he had probably a hundred PhDs under his supervision!

Chill the wine and consider that if you're happy with the thesis that the examiners probably are too unless they've chosen absolute arses

Will you not be there? We are usually there but not allowed to speak.

Good luck to them

When I had mine it was just me plus 2 examiners, I think in theory the supervisor is allowed but it's not the done thing. I wouldn't have wanted my supervisor there anyway

I think in my viva one of my supervisors was there basically to act as moderator.

The one PhD student I have supervised, the Dutch defence is public and it is expected that the main supervisor (promotor) asks the first question of the student. Supervisors are up on stage with the external examiners and actually have a say in whether to award or not.

There are enough educators on here that I thought it might be nice to have somewhere supportive to rant and problem solve.

Everyone is welcome.
