Thought i might start a thread for those of us aiming to improve at 10km there seems to be a lack of these threads only one i could find was one for sub 40 which is a bit quick for me.
At first i thought maybe start a General thread but even the 5km/Marathon threads seem to split into different times so sub 50s here we are
As some of you know i am aiming for a sub 45 (before i'm 45) - i have 2 years 5 months 3 days to go But i am a long way from that have only broken 50 once - back in 2005 and have gotten worse since so this will be the next goal
According to Fetch 3504 of us ran a 10km last year so theres got to be a few aiming for this.
This is an invitation as well to you fast guys and gals to pop in and offer advice
At the moment due to lack of miles last year have to get my fitness back as i've got no stamina/endurance at present but it will come
Hope to see some of you

Hi Pammie! I'll join you, a sub 50 10k is one of my goals for the year too. It sounds rather daunting at the moment so it would be good to see what other people are doing. I did knock off 7 minutes from my 10k last year from 62 to 55 minutes so hopefully I can improve some more! I think 10k is a difficult distance!!

Yay, another thread for me
I managed sub 50 only once before (Glagsow Womens 10k) in 07 or something, and would really like to do it again. A couple of years ago I managed 50:xx or 51:0x but last year's training all went a bit wrong so got nowhere near that then. Would like to do something similar to 50:0x or 49:5x this year at some point...

For My Light
Great idea. I have done 50:02 in May 2009, but coming back from injury and did 55:30 in Sept 2010. My main aim for 2011 is sub 2 HM but know I need to get my speed back so a sub 50 10km will just do the business.
Got 2 planned so far 20th March Bradford 10km and easter sunday Tuilip 10km. Think i am a long way from sub 50 at the moment but would love the encouragement from the group
PS.. I hate running 10km despite it being my best WAVA. The 50:02 was a complete shock to me..... oh such a perfick day!

Great - Used to think 10km was an ok distance did tire a little at 7-8k then after doing so many 5ks returned to do a 10k and it was so much harder.
though not purposedly trained for them. 55:30 as of last October but that was off liited training so hopefully time to come of
Planning on Southend 10km but thats in October. There's one at Horndon on the Hill but thats end of June and usually a hot and humid day So looking out for others but going to use Southend as my Goal race

Flump
*blush* I'm desperately hoping to go under an hour next month! *blush* My excuse is that I'm 'blind' and disabled (since an accident in 2005, although I was slow already - I did a 56 in 2005, in the same race I'll do next month). My recent 5k's were around 30 (plus and minus a bit). But that's a parkrun, and I am hoping a road race will be a bit faster. I did a 10-miler in October, in 10 minute miles. So hopefully, I can manage a *little* bit faster for a 10k. I will be thrilled if I can go under the hour!

Stick around flump, sorry to hear about your accident.
Thats why i dithered about the thread don't want to put people off. Do you have a person guide when you run. I'm sure a road race will be quicker than a park run all the ones i hear about have grassy and muddy bits. Well done on your 10 miler thats a good time

Pammie,
Are you going to be following a knowledgeable/successful coaches plan ? Or will you be go off this thread for your training plan? I think you will need a very structured consistent plan to get you to this goal. It needs to encompass technique, strength, flexibility, speed, distance. I think it is achievable with the appropriate training and dedication. I will be looking with interest and offering advice when possible.

JHuff At the moment i'm gathering ideas of what to do as never have purposedly trained for a specific distance, in recent years either training for a marathon (not very well) or 5km which are my most raced distance. They fitted in nicely with my work rota. a once monthly 5k race at lunchtime in London.
Also though i have raced other distances and not really focussed on 10km it is the distance whose results i am most disappointed with
At the moment just working on my base What would you say are the key elements of a 10k racer i've heard of VO2 Max
So really from now decided to concentrate on 10km (shall do some 5kms - if i can improve those times they will help)
I hope to learn things from here or in books and my club not in a position to pay for any professional coaching help
