mxhornet - you are right in saying that racing other individuals does come into it. When I did my good times, I was trying to win the women's section. Now that is a huge carrot. I was never a runner that came from behind. When I did my best time, 2.47.25, I did win the women's section, and the girl who came second was coming home like a train, but the race wasn't 27 miles! I was dying like a dog, but I got there first. If you guys think starting off at 2.48 pace is crazy, to do my best time, my coach had me setting of at 6 min mile pace, but for the week before I had to visualise myself, starting off at 6s, feeling fast and relaxed and not think about the finish. When the gun went off, I did go out at that pace, and the guys around me said, "too fast", but I just felt great. Sure, it feels really bad about the 20 mile mark, but if you've got your nose in front, it is amazing how you can hang on.

Well I think the end justifies the means. You got your PB that way and won the race so nobody can say it didn't work!

Keefy - as all you guys know, so many things can happen in the marathon. You can train well and get a pig of a day. Then you have to forget about time if you decide you are still going to run, and then you go for best possible place. To break 3hrs is a goal worth achieving, to have a time that starts with 2 is great, as even the world's best time only starts with 2. Good luck people, I'll leave your thread alone, and leave it to those that can do it now, and stay where I should be now, at 57 years of age, still trying to stay under 4hrs!!

NZC - stick around - your input is very valuable!!
Did a 3000m track race for the first time last night. Struggled round in 10:30. That hurt! My club mate who I tri train with did 9:51. Much better!

Ran a hilly 11 miler last night in 1.14. Last time I ran it that fast was 4 years ago when I was running 1.22 for my halfs. Hopefully a good sign that I'm getting somewhere. Heres a question - I know the last 20+Mile should be 3 weeks before. The problem I've got is I'm doing a half marathon that day. So my dilema is can I safely do a 18-20 mile marathon pace 2 weeks before my event or will it blow my chances.

I'd say it'll blow your chances, Twopies.
Nice fast run last night though.
If you are doing the half 3 weeks before, then I'd make that into a "20" by adding a nice 2-3 warm up then the balance of the "20" as a warm down nice and slow. I'd also bank a steady 20 the weekend beforehand, if I could.
Saying that- I CBA'd yesterday on the LSR 20 I should have done. It's the Mabo marathon in 4 weeks, but at 4:45am it was coming down in stair rods and forecast to flood until 10am, so I wisely went back to bed and settled for a modest 4.5 tempo last night, instead.

Thanks Ex Pat - Now thinking about a 16miler Marathon race pace 2 weeks before Berlin. Planned to do a 2hr45m run yesterday but misjudged it and it turned into a 3hr5min run. Ran between 23-24miles. On the positive side I now remember how hard its going to be over that last 30-40mins. Legs were shot afterwards but took a days completed rest today and they now feel fine.
