Thanks both. That's really interesting. I have basically decided on following a P&D plan it sounds as though I should go down the pace route. Do people still tend to use HRM's just to get a bit of feedback?

For me, the HRM provides feedback after exercise, and I don't actually look at when I'm running. I can compare individual sessions, and I get a better calorie count to inform how much cake I can consume of an evening!

P&D still gives heart rates for runs (table 7.1 on p144 in my copy), and I find following HR on recovery runs in particular stops me doing everything too fast.

I agree with that ^ too from AJLB; I've never really had an issue running slowly but lots of folks do. You've got to know something about your HRmax though (obviously, sorry!).

The HR ranges in P&D IMO are to wide to be of any real use. I use my HR to guide my recovery running, but actually having been doing that for around 6 years I kind of know the effort level and dont need to monitor HR as much as I used to

Interesting. I must admit to not really paying much attention to my heart rate data in the past (mainly due to not really knowing how to interpret it).

A quiet time of year. - what's everyone up to? I've entered Yeovil (10th June) and so am trying for one last big week of training before my traditional two week taper. Going to be a little bit interesting as I am on holiday for the week before the race (in Deon so stopping an extra night on the way home to race) so diet and running will not be my usual. The half starts an hour after the marathon and the marathon is a two lap course so if I have a good run and Mark (my husband) has a bad one (He's doing the half) we could be finishing at the same time which would be convenient if nothing else. I've only had two weeks of good training since Boston so I'm not sure what shape I'm in but I would dearly love to go sub 2.55..........

Meant to be doing Black Rock 5 on Friday, but twisted my ankle on Monday so am currently working from home with a laptop and bag of frozen peas! Hope I’m good to go before Alloa Half Marathon comes around next.

Holiday! Dodging bears and, er, cars in Yellowstone. Got a 10k coming up and also one of the USA's rare parkruns to keep things interesting. More miles than the usual lazy post-marathon May for me anyway.

Full blown taper maranoia here - 4 days out from Edinburgh - will it be too hot? Too windy? Will I get blisters? Will I hit my target time? Can I go faster? Yada yada yada...
