Wow Moraghan thats awsome! If you get to that shape, you will be ranked very highly in the UK!

I mean look at this guy who was ranked 18th M35 in the UK last year and he "only" ran 2.01

Do you remember what your first ever 800m time was?

I've rooted around. In august 2000 I ran 2:02.23. It was a weak race and I do remember having a fairly heavy night beforehand and was a bit hungover. Ah, to be young again!

Progression:

Aug '00: 2:02.23
May '01: 1:59.4
Jun '01: 1:59.56
Aug '01: 1:56.61
Jul '09: 2:00.70 (3rd, very slow early pace)
Aug '09: 2:08

Aug '09: 1:57.12

The '00 and '01 races (and the 2:08) were done in weak races and with massed starts (not restricted to own lane for first 100m). In 2001 I had very good speed, but poor stamina - this year I've been working on stamina and trying to coax the speed back.

Thats interesting to see your progression. With the May '01 to Aug '01 do you think you managed to knock those 3 seconds off by improving your stamina?

So before doing those 800's did you have a good 400m background?

I'm interested to see how it's translated. I know I need to work on speed. Quickest 400m I've recorded was 56 in a training session (time trial). But I'm guessing I'm gonna need to get that down to around 52/53/54 to get a sub 2 800 (depending on my strength vs speed).

I have every session in minute detail. Basically I was doing multipace training but without much LT or endurance work - mainly 200s - 400s fast and another session of vo2 max. I also had a pacer for one lap in the 1:56 (but he went too slow).

I sprinted (11.1 for 100m) and jumped a bit at university (and did one 400m at about 51.0) age and then didn't do any specific run training until jun '00 where I ran 18:14 for a 5k. I had no 400m background but ran a 50.77 in april '01, a 50.44 in May and a 49.7 in July).

Last year I ran two 400's in 52.0 and 52.03 - I went off much too quick for the second one because there was a girl in the race and I had the outside lane (how sad is that). Had a very short season last year and never really addressed 400m speed, which I'm correcting this year. Will be very disappointed if I can't go close to 50 this year.

I agree that you're going to have to get some 400m speed - although I'm an extreme example of weak stamina so you won't need to be at those times! I got a lot out of sessions like 2 * (4 * 200) done quickly in 2001, but this year I am also doing some shorter acceleration reps as well.

I did maximal 100s last night and given that 4 reps took me 55 seconds when added together I really am a long way from a 2 min 800 :¬0

Moraghan, I wish I had your natural speed! Do you have any other sporting backgrounds? I hope I don't need a 52/53 sec 400m as well!

Nice one Jhuff, are you enjoying running fast again? Bet it's not the same as your sub 4 min mile days!

Gobi, your almost there mate ;) just need to put 8 of them together at almost that speed!
