There have been a lot of ups and downs over the past 10 months. A short uphill walk back from the shops requiring a pit stop to sit on a wall half way. Then a few weeks later feeling great and running a marathon. Soon discovered that my body dictated what could be done and if I pushed too much it would switch off ( literally ) never felt so fatigued. Had days when my OH would leave notes on my bedside table while I slept saying she had been out, ran 3 miles and was now heading out on another loop. I quickly learnt how to recognise the point at which my body would start to submit and factored in days when I knew I was incapable of getting up and down the stairs. In time the better days started to outweigh the bad but floundered now and then with relapses. Completely random things would hit me badly, getting breathless putting a load of washing in the machine. Slowly built up miles each day and the amount of rest needed lessened but was always prepared for the days I switched off again. Getting any pace out of a run was not worth the long recovery time so, slow and steady pleased to say miles are back and currently been able to run every day in Jan but, still not good doing over exerted lifting. Time and patience is our friend with this one. Wishing you all good and safe recoveries listen to your body and try to block out the mental anxieties. |

Have to add that I was fortunate to have the company of my OH when our running- there were days when I had little knowledge of the route I was on despite having ran it many times in the past. The fuzzy head not only affected my exercise but resulted in some bizarre accidental purchases from the supermarket.

Longwayround [LWR]
Today's 'run' was almost exactly the length of the episode of Inside Health which Sharkie posted about yesterday. I'm defining a run as activity that involves moving my legs in such a way that it might help me one day to feel like a runner again. In truth, it was a walk. A slow walk, of about 2 miles per hour. Judging by how it felt, tomorrow may need to be a rest day.

Zola Budd posted this on her facebook page yesterday facebook.com :- "COVID-19 and running: I felt I had to share my experience with COVID to inform other runners. Both I and my daughter was recently diagnosed with COVID. Fortunately, we came through the illness without any severe symptoms. It has been four weeks now since our positive test and three weeks since I experienced any symptoms. I decided to start training again and am experiencing the following symptoms: elevated heart rate. My heart rate, even doing easy runs of not more than 30 minutes is about 20 beats per minute faster than normal. What concerns me is that the rate of recovery is four times longer. Usually, after an easy run, it takes about 1 minute for my HR to go below 120bpm. Now, it takes almost four minutes. This shows me that even after three weeks of no symptoms, my heart is still under strain. I feel I had to share this to help other runners returning after having COVID. Please be patient with yourself and careful getting back into running as no one is exactly sure how COVID affect us, especially if overt symptoms are minimal" |

I've managed to get my GP to refer me to the long covid clinic, although not heard anything further yet - I'm hoping there may be some help there. Running is just a pipe dream now - I'm getting out of breath just trying to put my socks on. |
