It was good. Apart from the one little bit that jarred.

I'm enjoying it generally, but (trying to avoid spoilers) the similarity to the plot of the underwhelming "Nemesis" rather irritates.

Whilst not the best of the TNG films, Nemesis isn't totally awful
There were a few silly bits (you could tell John Logan and Stuart Baird hadn't been involved in star trek previously), but overall I didn't think it was too bad.
Personally I don't have a problem with Insurrection either, although I know some argue it's effectively a longer TNG episode, but I think it's reasonable, so I'm quite glad to see call backs to the other three TNG films in this series of Picard, not just first contact.
My issue with episode 3 was the conversation with Picard and riker at the end of the episode. They're supposed to have known each other for 34 years at this point and have been friends for nearly as long. Would they really speak like that to each other? No. Felt a forced bit of scripting.

Anyway, I'm rewatching STII at the moment having watched TMP:DC (much improved over the original cut) the other day.

Fozzy, I only said Nemesis was underwhelming - I've heard it called much worse! I'd put Insurrection in the same bracket, though that more obviously suffers from comparison with it's immediate predecessor. I completely agree with your complaint about episode 3 though. And yes, the DC of TMP is remarkably watchable. As a child seeing it at the cinema I remember I was completely taken up in the spectacle of the original cut - nice to be innocent and uncritical!

AJLB - sorry wasn't meaning to be critical of your comments.
I think for the 'fans' who are generally very critical of Nemesis and insurrection, they basically want to see a certain type of star trek film. And basically the same thing all the time.
But they tested that with the stupid kelvin timeline films which went overboard for action with no story and that might have worked for one film, it was already showing how silly it was by the second and the third just looks and feels tired.
Hence the film series got dumped.
Having rewatched STII this every evening, which pretty much is classed as the best outing by most (although I differ personally), although it's broadly mostly action, it does have a story and character development (albeit mostly Kirk and Savvik with everyone else effectively having a bit part - that's why I prefer VI and insurrection)

I thought the ending was good because they are grumpy old men now who haven't seen much of each other for decades.
Grumpy old men fall out with their friends quite a lot. Plus, obviously, the entire crew is now toast because of Picard, so there's that. (Obvs they aren't toast.)
