Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)
Annoying thing with newspaper reports of scientific articles is that they grab the most eye-catching bit and put it as headline and by-line, but then leave the most interesting bits until later (or worse, just misinterpret altogether, but in this case, the former)... " “We don’t think that being a morning person is actually what was beneficial. Rather, we think it is a signal of having a faster running clock that is better able to adapt to seasonal variation in light levels,” Capra said. “At higher latitudes it is beneficial to have a clock that is more flexible and better able to change to match the variable seasonal light levels.”" So if I have Neanderthal genes, it doesn't just help me get up early but means I don't mind winter as much as my wife and others who are perhaps more Sapiens, but suffer from SAD, or just don't like winter? I know that quote was a bit out of context and there was more meaning to it (that day length doesn't vary so much in the tropics) but the whole fairytale seemed like a load of bollocks anyway. If hunter-gatherers need 4h of daylight per day (as stated) then there's ample in winter even as far north as Shetland and they could just get up in the middle of the day year-round without bothering to vary anything.

hw.ac.uk Nice wee breakthrough on semiconductors that can do the optical comms that quantum communication (it's my alma mater!) Nice wee anti-Brexit note at the bottom for anyone that way inclined! "The research was funded by the European Commission and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). " G |

bbc.co.uk New record in nuclear fusion lab test - 19kWh in 5 seconds. About what I use to heat my house over a day or so. So not huge! But biggest yet. UK is to build a fusion power station? I didn't think anyone was yet trying to build a commercial station? G |

Fusion is about 20 years away yet, and has been for the last 50 years or so.
