I had my first vaccine jab three weeks ago and have been struggling with my runs since. Before having the jab I was doing really well and felt like I was in good form. However, since having the vaccine, it feels like my performance has fallen off a cliff. During each run, I feel like my muscles have no give in them. They feel taut. Also, my breathing is not as easy as it was. I struggle to catch breath and it feels like I am not getting enough oxygen in. Heart rate is slightly higher than usual and can be quite erratic from one run to the next.
Post run, I am not feeling any more tired and not getting DOMS.
In short, I haven't changed my routine or my training regime.
The only factor that has been different is my performance either side of the vaccine!
Anyone else seen a similar effect? Any advice welcome.

I'll be keen to hear what others have to say too. I'm having my first jab tomorrow and I'm hoping to run 5+ miles three days later. If others think that's too soon, I may postpone that run until next weekend.

I had the AZ jab last Saturday. The first run afterwards was on Tuesday and was heavy going, slow, with higher than usual hr. Thursday was a little better but still didn't feel right. Both runs about 5.5 miles, flat, road, easy route.
This might have nothing to do with the jab of course, although that's the only material change in my circumstances. No side effects to speak of, other than a slightly bruisey arm for a couple of days. No night sweats or fluey symptoms as reported by others.
Which is all rather inconclusive and we're all different. But since the idea of the jab is to kickstart the immune system I guess there's going to be things going on under the bonnet, so best to take a bit of a break?

A few days of feeling unwell/iffy performance after the jab is plausible and seems to be a common though by no means universal experience, but after three weeks I'd be looking for explanations other than the jab.

Phil, I ran about 6 hours after my AZ jab, felt fine and just carried on as normal in the following days. As it was a weekend that involved 50 miles in the 48 hours after the jab. However, if I had felt ill or had obvious flags like a raised resting HR or abnormal run HR readings I would have missed runs accordingly. I'd suggest you just plan on doing what you do normally. If come the time you feel unwell/abnormal then take a rest day. Everyone reacts differently so the only right approach is the one based on how you react.

I’d agree with^. I had my jab at 9am yesterday. I had the AZ version. Have felt achy today but paracetamol seems to be helping. I have a run scheduled for tomorrow but will see how I feel when I get up.

after mine I felt lethargic the following day so didnt run and in fact went to bed for most of the day (totally unheard of for me to do that). The next morning i was feeling normal so went out for a tentative run, ready to ditch it if it didnt feel right, but felt fine and ran my longest run for several weeks. Since then my running has been normal with the usual rubbish days and slightly better days

the moral of this story is running improves after a rest day
