EvilPixie I did Chester Metric a couple of years ago, running with others will pull you along, and you also get the full marathon runners along the same route on the way back into town, so plenty of other runners around to keep you going.

Fabulous run again there Pam, geez , doing 45/30 and achieving that is quite something! That's way way beyond my capabilities these days. Yeah, steady heart rate on your 7.25 miler EPix and well done. |

Thanks Steve45. I do enjoy the run/walk but I'm not sure if it'll help me get my 5k time down or if I should stick to just running. |

I think "experiment" is the answer Pam. If you are able to run without needing to walk I would suspect that you would do a faster 5k. I emphasise the word "need". Lots of us fancy a walk when we're getting a bit tired but for those who are fit enough then there's usually plenty left in the tank. Not currently the case for me because of heart issues... Having said that we know that a strategic run/walk regime pays dividends but when it comes to races then it's more beneficial in the longer distances. I enjoy my run walks! 5.6 miles this morning at 20 (run)/30 walk . |

I think you also get used to walking so walk even if not needed I'm trying to keep running more and still keep to 30s walk breaks if possible as I want my legs to be happy running longer come Chester! |

Steve45 You're right about walking when you don't need to. That's why I find run walk good because it doesn't feel like you've failed when you walk as it's planned. It's all about fighting with your head which seems to want to take the easiest route all the time. |

I remember London 2005 when I was recovering from a stress fracture and physio said "no point telling you not to do it is there so please run walk" I felt so guilty on my walks as the crowd were so supportive so I glared at my watch when walking to try and make it obvious I was clock watching!!!

For a 5K time, I suggest you need longer intervals, both run and walk. Even though you are shifting, with such a close ratio there will be a limit you'll hit just due to the time spent walking in any 5K. (My last two parkruns: pretty sure they'd have been faster as r/w, they'd certainly have felt a lot easier.) |
