Wondering if any RDs can help me or any speedy vet runners who may have found themselves in this situation. If say a vet 40 runner also came in the top 3 of a race would they win both the top 3 prize and the vet 40 prize or just the top 3 prize with the vet 40 prize being allocated to the next eligible runner? TIA

I’ve seen it given both ways. Probably more usual to give the position prizes and then the age prize, with the next age category down person getting that one.

From races I have been in, they have usually been awarded the top 3 prize and not the category prize.

I'm the RD for a small race, so we just have a prize for the first male and first female runners.

I've come third in a 10k but been given the second prize as the women in front was a veteran and first women vet prize was greater.

I think that's the right way to do it. Give whatever is greater value and then spread the rest, but some RDs give both to the same person. As long as the rules specify which it's fine.

It happens fairly often in the women's prizes by the way.

Same as jennywren.

A lot of the races I do, will only award one prize per person. In fact I've won a V40 prize because the winner was in the top three, yet I was actually beaten by a V50 runner.

However, I've also been to races elsewhere, where runners can win multiple prizes. Once saw someone take at least 3 prizes.

The only post Covid race I won a prize for (2nd 50+ but the winner was overall 3rd) just sent me vouchers in the post with no indication of what they were for. Which is one way to do it!

Normally it seems to be one person one prize in these parts.

Thanks everyone. Race I was timing today was won by a V40 which is how the question arose. Only trophies as prizes and he was happy taking home only one but a few people queried it

we stick with overall first, one runner one prize.

I set prizes to make sure category prize is equal or less than lowest overall prizes. (hope that makes sense).

I'd agree with 1 winner, 1 prize ... probably choice/value/prestige which someone gets. (ie if a trophy, is 3rd overall better than 1st over 50? - probably depends on the event and the runner's perspective).

Assuming the age classes are automatic, not selected. If someone has ticked a box to be in the 40s or 50s, then I'd stick with that.

I have seen it given both ways too, I think the fairest is single prize of the highest value.
